Matsutani Chemical Industry Co., Ltd

Since its establishment in 1919, the Matsutani Chemical Industry has been a pioneer of the starch industry in Japan, researching, developing, producing, and distributing starch materials, functional materials, foods for specified health use, and wide-ranging edible starches. To keep pace with people's growing interest in health and changing lifestyles, the company has developed a number of products in the fields of preventive medicine and nursing care and continues to focus on research and development of products that meet the needs of, or go one step ahead of, today's consumers.

Matsutani Chemical Industry's Pine Fiber® is a water-soluble dietary fiber (resistant maltodextrin) approved as a food for specific health use and proven to control increased blood sugar levels after eating. Today, about 30% of food products approved as foods for specific health use contain resistant maltodextrin.

Recently, the company has begun conducting joint research into D-psicose, a type of sugar rarely found in nature with Kagawa University in Kagawa Prefecture.
D-psicose is considered a "dream sugar,"as it has zero calories and is seven times sweeter than sugar while also enabling post-meal blood sugar levels to be controlled and preventing obesity. Matsutani is in the process of commercializing D-psicose and other sweeteners.

As for compressors that is power part of the company's plants and support its leading-edge R & D and production, Matsutani is doing all it can to maximize and maintain the quality of compressed air. The company has adopted IHI's "Tx Series" Oil-Free Turbo Compressors in pursuit of "security, safety, and stable supply." We had the privilege of interviewing a representative of Matsutani Chemical Industry, who shared with us how they came to choose IHI Compressors and their experiences with the company to date.

Detail of the interview can be viewed by pressing the following buttons:

How did you come to consider the installation (renewal) of your compressor equipment?

Our company was established in 1919. After WWII, production began expanding while our focus shifted from industrial to edible starches. To accommodate the production expansion, we kept adding new screw compressors until we had as many as 30 units in 1998.

It cost us about 50 million yen annually just to maintain the 30 compressors. Moreover, in order to meet ever-growing demand, we had to put production first instead of spending sufficient time to maintain the compressors. This resulted in frequent production stoppages due to compressor trouble, which significantly affected our production efficiency.

Therefore, we began searching for highly reliable compressors to eliminate this downtime, and considered integrating multiple compressors into fewer larger units to reduce maintenance. While we were also seeking more cost-effective maintenance, more efficient operations, and higher energy efficiency, we heard about IHI's Oil-Free Turbo Compressor.

Faced with many challenges and requirements, why did you choose IHI's compressor?

IHI's Oil-Free Turbo Compressors seemed reliable, as they had over 40 years of history and an extensive track record. Moreover, they were large type compressors suitable for integrated installation, which we thought would bring high efficiency and energy conservation.

In addition, we anticipated lower maintenance costs compared to existing screw compressors. The ease of operation and maintenance of having fewer units was also one of the key factors.

As a result of installing the Oil-Free Turbo Compressors "Tx-Series," were you able to overcome your challenges?

After due consideration, we initially decided to install one unit. Two years later, we purchased four additional units of the same model, and followed by an additional three units five years later. We are now using a total of eight Turbo Compressors.

Adopting the Turbo Compressors has reduced our maintenance cost to 1/3 of that for screw compressors. Using significantly fewer units has really simplified our operation and management, further reducing hidden costs.

In addition, improved operation and having a spare unit means no more production downtime due to compressor failure.

Finally, we are also satisfied with their energy- and space-saving features.

Faced with many challenges and requirements, why did you choose IHI's compressor?

Lately, more and more people are interested in the global food supply, "food education," "food safety," and other food-related aspects.

We expect that the updated compressors will meet our needs for low energy consumption, low maintenance, and low operating load, thereby supporting our growing production to ensure the "security, safety, and stable supply" of our food products.

Our production has been increasing annually, and we now begin to supply products to food manufactures in the US and Europe.

To support our ever-expanding production and innovative research and development activities, we will not only keep our compressor equipment at peak performance levels but also pursue eco-friendliness of our equipment, including higher efficiency to reduce both CO2 emissions and noise levels.

Also, we would like to contribute continuously to the sound lives and wellbeing of people in Japan and throughout the world by supplying starches, which are a gift of our mother earth.
