IHI Awarded Level Crossing Obstacle Detection Device for Italy’s National Railway -First level crossing obstacle detection device in Japan to receive SIL4(※1) -

Tokyo, April 27, 2015 – IHI Corporation (“IHI”) has received an order for 127 units of 3D Laser Radar for level crossing obstacle detection(※2) from Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (“RFI”) which manages railway infrastructure for the state owned railway network company Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane. This first large order from Europe is a result of SIL4 acquisition which proves the highest level of risk reduction is to be achieved using the device as well as being recognized as the leading manufacture of the next generation level crossing obstacle detection device as IHI has already supplied and managing over 1,300 units domestically. Installation of these units starts from May 2015 and will be completed by December 2015.

In recent years, mandatory tender requirement for level crossing obstacle detection device includes certification to meet international safety standards(※3). SIL4 obtained by IHI proves that this device meets the highest level of functional safety standards.

The first order from RFI and acquirement of SIL4 will enable IHI to enter other European markets namely UK, Germany and France.

(※1) SIL is a measurement of safety performance which is of international standard. Four SIL levels are defined with SIL4 being the most dependable.
【Main features】
1. Speed…Detects location and motion of an object in real time.
2. Accuracy…It measures distance to the object using TOF method achieving high accuracy.
3. Safety…Stable detection under bad weather conditions.
(※2) 3D laser radar for level crossing obstacle detection detects and calculates locations and shapes of obstacles within the level crossing to prevent train accidents.
(※3) International safety standards:Designed to ensure the safety function of products. EN50126(RAMS) (※4) ,EN50128(Software safety),EN50129(System safety) are the standards for railway transport in Europe which derived from IEC61508. Later these three standards again became international standards.
(※4) RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety):Railway systems tests these four properties throughout the development phases.
