Bridges, Water Gates, Steel Structures
IHI has participated in numerous major bridge construction projects both at home and abroad, including the Seto Ohashi Bridge and the Akashi Strait Bridge projects in Japan, the Second Bosporus Bridge and the Golden Horn Bridge projects in Turkey, the Carquinez Bridge project in California in the U.S.A., and the Binh Bridge project in Vietnam. With regard to the gates used in rivers and dams, IHI is Japan's top manufacturer with a comprehensive capability that includes their manufacture, installation, and inspection and maintenance. IHI has been contributing to water utilization and flood control projects in both Japan and overseas, mainly in Southeast Asia. In addition, IHI has also delivered many aircraft maintenance systems that combine steel structures with machinery.
Recently, we have also devoted special attention to hybrid structures, building many hybrid caissons and pontoons that combine the strengths of steel and concrete.
Suspension bridge “Carquinez Bridge”
In March 2000, IHI received an order from an American joint venture company (JV) for over 10,000 metric tons of orthotropic box girders for the New Carquinez Bridge in the suburbs of San Francisco, California. This is the first long-span suspension bridge in U.S.A. in 40 years. IHI fabricated the girder at Aichi Works, and completed the delivery in March 2003.
The bridge was opened to traffic in November 2003.
Suspension bridge “Akashi Strait Bridge”
IHI fabricated and erected the main towers and girders for the Akashi Strait Bridge, the world's longest suspension bridge with total length of 3,911 m and center span of 1,991 m.
Cable-stayed bridge “Binh Bridge”
This is 17 spans continuos bridge, including a cable-stayed bridge with its length of 1,280m, in Haiphong, Vietnam. IHI constructed the bridge comprehensively including roads and base construction.
Suspension bridge “Irtysh River Bridge”
As the sole prime contractor for the Irtysh River Bridge, the longest steel suspension bridge in the former Soviet Union (total length: 1,086 m center span: 750 m), IHI completed the project 13 months ahead of schedule.
Rigid-frame bridge
This is the common structure in city highways that combines piers and beams. The photo shows Nishi Shinjuku Junction of Metropolitan Expressway, which is typical bridge with complex structure in city area junctions.
Girder bridge
This is a structural form, aiming for reducitonof construction cost, consists of main girders and floor slabs to support roads. The photo shows Isabu Interchange in Shizuoka City that consists of continuous composite plate girder bridges and continuous box girder bridges placed on the connection road between Tomei Expressway and New Tomei Expressway.

Our pedestrian bridges can fulfil a function as regional landmarks designed to blend in with urban landscapes.
Dam gate
A dam gate used to control the release of flood and reservoir water.
New type rotational gate for dams
IHI installed new type rotational gates, which were variations of the dolphin gate, solely
developed by IHI (generally acknowledged rising sector gate), as dam usage. It well matches to the landscape.
River gate
River gates can be utilized to regulate river flow and block back currents from the sea.
Hybrid caisson
IHI hybrid caissons are characterized by the hybrid structure using steel plates and concrete, and are high-strength and can be applied to complex shapes. They are used in breakwaters, quays, seawalls,etc.
Skew plate breakwater
This is a deep-water, footed, detached breakwater that was developed with the Public Works Research Institute to prevent coastal erosion and for multipurpose utilization of coastal areas.
Immersed tunnel
These are one element (box) in constructing submarine tunnels that are divided into sizes that will not impair towing and sinking. There are different types, such as hybrid steel and concrete caissons, steel-reinforced caissons, etc. (The photograph shows a steel and concrete caisson)
Floating pier
Regardless of the water depth, the distance between the water surface and the crown remains constant. Therefore, there will be no height gap between ships and the quay. Also, since the pier is moored with posts, it sways very little.
Floating breakwater
These are placed offshore to reduce or break waves. A design that is backed by maritime structural technology provides stable performance. These breakwaters provide an economical and easy-to-construct breakwater for deep water and weak seabed areas. These are environmentally friendly structures that do not disturb the sea currents.

Shield

Large-diameter shield tunneling machine
IHI has supplied many large-diameter shield machines, including the one used in the construction of the Tokyo Bay Aqualine tunnel.
Combination circular shield tunneling machine
Non-circular cross sections, such as in the double track sections of subways, can be tunneled efficiently by extending the ends of the spokes of the cutters according to the rotation.
Horizontal Multiple-micro shield tunneling machine
This shield machine, used in the construction of box-shaped large-section tunnels such as road tunnels, can be flexibly adapted to any section shape.
Double-O tube shield machine
This shield tunneling machine drills inbound and outbound lanes at a time, for example, for subways.
This machine provides economic advantages with shortened construction time and reduced drilling soil volume and is employed in foreign countries as well.
Rotating shield tunneling machine
Single machine can excavate shaft from the ground, and continuously tunnel by right angles. IHI's new technology developed through joint research with users.
Upward-facing shield tunneling machine
This shield tunneling machine tunnels upwards from an existing tunnel towards the surface. This minimizes the affect on the surface during construction of a tunnel, so that it is more friendly to the environment.
Rectangular type shield tunneling machine
This shield tunneling machine is used, for example, to construct grade-separating tunnels to solve congestion at the intersections or busy railroad crossings. It drills a large section by repeatedly moving back and forth between start and drilling locations.
Automatic segment assembling system

Security
IHI has been releasing various types of products using IT, control technology, and sensor technology. IHI utilizes 3D laser radar road traffic monitoring system, level crossing obstacle detection system and aims at the application to the various security fields. Large X-ray inspection systems for customs inspections conduct X-ray imaging tests of large container cargos, and IHI has the highest market share for these systems in Japan. IHI also has delivered a large number of X-ray inspection systems including small and medium-sized systems for customs inspections at ports as well as airports. Furthermore, IHI hybrid mass dampers and seismic isolation floor systems have been developed through integration of various technologies, such as steel structure, machine, sensor and control technologies, and these devices are now installed in high-rise buildings and computer centers, playing important roles in disaster prevention.
3D laser radar
3D laser radar detects the location and movement of every object in real-time independent of light and weather, even at night and under bad weather.
3D laser radar was introduced a lot as level crossing obstacle detection system, and introduction was started more as monitoring system in the road safety system. In addition, the application to various fields is possible such as the object recognition by the robot eye under the bad environment, the invasion monitoring of the important institution, the soundness diagnosis of the structure.
Large X-ray inspection system
This inspection device conducts horizontal and vertical X-ray inspections on container cargos as part of imported / exported cargo customs examination. This device can conduct high-penetration, high-resolution imaging tests and capable of identifying object materials.
Medium and small X-ray inspection system
IHI provides various types of X-ray inspection devices such as devices that can vary X-ray output in accordance with examined objects or devices capable of identifying object materials.
Digital recorder “FineREC”®
Due to the integration of the recorder and LCD monitor, low-cost and space saving is realized.
The integrated monitor type provides 4 channels or 8 channels, and the stand-alone type (separate monitor) provides 16 channels. Visual surveillance is supplied via network for all products.
Oil leak monitor
This is a high performance oil leakage detector using optical fibers in its sensor. By making it float in the water, it can detect even the smallest amount of oil, either floating on the water surface or mixed with water, in running water or in static water within 12 seconds.
Silencer (sound absorber)
Noise created by the safety valves, ventilation fans and other equipment can be effectively reduced by sound absorbing silencers. Optimal silencers are designed and supplied depending on the specification of the equipment.
Hybrid mass damper
Hybrid mass dampers effectively counteract oscillations in high-rise buildings and in the towers of bridges during construction created by the wind.
Portable fire fighting pump
A portable pump used for fighting fires in urban or rural areas.
Water purifiers
Portable and fixed model water purifiers, with a high-performance filtration film, supply purified water for drinking as well as daily use.
