IHI ENGINEERING REVIEW

Vol.47 No.2

1. Products

Products1

IHI Aerospace Co., Ltd.

At 2:00 PM on September 14, 2013, an Epsilon rocket followed a straight line flying into space, cutting through the blue sky while leaving a white trail behind. As planned, this rocket placed the planetary observation satellite "Hisaki" into the target orbit, and was Japan's successful launching of a solid-fuel type rocket after an interval of 7 years. The Epsilon rocket is a successor to the M-V rocket, and IHI Aerospace Co., Ltd. is in charge of the body of the system. With a newly developed launch control system, the launch preparation period of future rockets has been greatly shortened.

Products2

IHI Infrastructure Systems Co., Ltd.

Until now, in order to quantitatively measure the state of deterioration of concrete, the only method available was coring, in which internal samples were collected. IHI Infrastructure Systems Co., Ltd. has developed an innovative non-destructive diagnostic system for deterioration of concrete by applying the same spectroscopic analysis technology that is used to measure the sugar content of fruit.

2. Technologies

Technologies1

IHI Corporation

In production, automation brings many benefits, such as high productivity and consistent quality. However, the processes called precision finishing rely on an expert technician' s skill acquired from many years of experience, and automation has been considered difficult. By combining our robot control and system integration technologies, IHI has completed a robot system able to automate high-precision finishing processes.

3. Business

Business1

MEISEI ELECTRIC CO., LTD.

Predicting local, brief weather changes such as the recent increase in frequent torrential downpours, tornados, and squalls has reached a limit with conventional weather forecast technology. MEISEI ELECTRIC CO., LTD. has developed a low-cost weather station, and by installing a large number of these stations to form a dense observation network it becomes possible to conduct local observation by remote monitoring. Sharing this information will lead to new developments in disaster protection, daily living, and business activities.

Much attention is being paid to LNG-fueled vessels as a way of satisfying the IMO's emission control requirements. Japan Marine United Corporation (JMU) has developed an LNG fuel gas system employing an IHI-SPB gas fuel tank. A case study on an LNG-fueled container vessel fitted with this system is being carried out. JMU has converted IHI-SPB cargo containment technology into a fuel tank, allowing confirmation of the high reliability this system offers under harsh sea conditions, such as those found in the Japan-Alaska sea route. This high level of reliability is thanks to JMU's experience in LNG. IHI-SPB fuel tanks can flexibly accommodate shape restrictions, providing the highest volume efficiency for the available space. This case study on a large LNG-fueled container vessel employing an IHI-SPB gas fuel system demonstrates that a minimal loss of container cargo capacity relative to the original design can be achieved.

The IHI-SPB tank is an excellent LNG tank for FLNG and LNG fuelled vessels, because it has high structural safety against sloshing. The high structural safety is achieved through a highly reliable design technique, backed up by many experiments and numerical simulations the result of which is the prevention of resonance between liquid motion and ship motion. This paper describes the necessity of avoiding such resonance and describes the numerical simulation of pressure induced by internal liquid motion using the Particle method, which is an advanced calculation technique.

The recent skyrocketing demand for LNG and deep water gas field development attracted the attention of businesses to floating LNG production, storage, and offloading installations, LNG transportation, and LNG-fueled vessels in the marine and offshore industries. The IHI-SPB cargo containment system has excellent features and is suited to LNG carriers sailing on rough seas and floating LNG units working nonstop, because it has intrinsically safe functions, thanks to its high reliability and structural features, and preparedness in the event of an accident. This paper introduces these safety functions that the IHI-SPB is built with.

If large compressive residual stresses are produced on the surface of a structure by shot-peening, surface heat treatment, and so on, the material will have high structural strength, and it is this characteristic that enables downsizing and lightening of the structure. On the other hand, if tensile residual stresses are produced in a welded structure during the welding process, Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) or fatigue failure may occur. Accurate evaluation of residual stresses is therefore very important. This paper discusses the residual stress measurement technologies that are being used in IIC.

The offshore oil and gas industry maintains a high standard for HSSE (Health, Safety, Security and Environment) protection. IHI Aichi Works successfully executed the ERAWAN 2 FSO project to offshore standards within the approved budget and schedule, for a well-known oil major in the year 2012, almost 16 years since the last offshore project was executed in the same yard. This success is based on our efficient Project Management System. We have kept records of the lessons learned as well as areas for improvement, which will be implemented in the next project.
