Taking on the challenges of transporting petroleum with the world's largest tanker.
In order to secure crude oil for Japan's growing economy, IHI built the world's largest oil tanker, the 200,000 ton Idemitsu Maru, in 1966. The world was amazed by the many IHI technological innovations incorporated into the tanker, including technology that enabled the tanker to safely travel the continuous shoals of the Strait of Malacca and achieve maximum crude oil carrying capacity with low fuel consumption.
The IHI products played an important role in Japan's high growth economy.
