(1)IHI Opens IHI Museum to the public
IHI opened the IHI Museum to the public on the first floor of the Pier West Square Building in the River City 21 area, Tsukudajima, Tokyo, in May 1998. The old Ishikawajima area, located in Tsukuda, Chuo-ku, Tokyo, is the birthplace of the modern shipbuilding industry.
The Ishikawajima Shipyard, the matrix of IHI, was founded in 1853. Since then, IHI has been involved in the shipbuilding industry and many other industries. As the company used the most advanced technology of the time for its products, IHI history overlaps Japanese industrial history.
After the closing of the factory in 1979, the Ishikawajima area was given a new name, River City 21, and continues to grow with a leading role in the project to develop the waterfront by the Tokyo metropolitan government. The Ishikawajima historical museum is a company-owned museum filled with unique displays and original ideas.
