In the spring of 2015, we introduced low-volatile fuel burners into a boiler plant operated on oil coke and heavy oil. Stable combustion of oil coke is difficult to achieve by conventional techniques. This burner eliminates the use of heavy oil that helps achieve stable combustion and thereby contributes to fuel cost reduction.

TIGAR® is based on circulating fluidized bed technology, and it is operable at a lower temperature and pressure compared with other gasifiers. It can gasify unused fuel, such as lignite, and is characterized by a great gasification process with an excellent operability and economic efficiency. IHI has started a project to demonstrate its abilities, taking one step closer towards commercialization!!

The number of distributed resources and renewable energy generators has increased dramatically in Europe and the US in recent years. In response to this trend, electric power players aim to build new business models based on flexible and optimal grid operation. Energy Storage Systems (ESS) such as rechargeable batteries, are have great potential to enable such models; however, the optimal configuration and operation of storage systems is complex. This article provides a comprehensive introduction to IHI’s leading software platform ESWare, a powerful end-to-end environment for the optimal configuration and operation of energy storage systems in behind-the-meter and grid-based projects.

In recent years, in order to stably supply electric power and improve energy self-sufficiency in Japan, it has been proposed to utilize renewable energies. In particular, the construction of large-scale photovoltaic power plants (mega-solars) and system interconnections are actively performed. However, the amount of photovoltaic generated power largely varies due to some causes such as the effect of obscuring the sun, and therefore an adverse effect on the voltage and frequency of a system associated with the large-scale introduction of mega-solars is a concern. This paper describes a battery control technique for stably supplying power from a power plant to a system, which we are developing in response to such a concern, and future development.

The utilization of low grade coal is expected to increase in the future as the main source of coal fuel for coal fired power plants. The market for low grade coal firing power station equipment is expected to expand especially with the spread of the use of lignite-firing due to the low fuel cost, as it is not being utilized at the moment, and because it can be produced locally for mine-mouth power plants. IHI has a market entry strategy for lignite-fired power plants. That is why IHI is developing distinctive technologies to establish lignite firing technology and develop high efficiency/low cost lignite-fired power plants. As part of our strategic plan, IHI became shareholders of Steinmüller Engineering GmbH, a German company with rich experience in lignite-fired boilers in Europe. This paper introduces IHI’s strategy for entering the market of lignite-fired power plants.
