| October 2002 saw the establishment of our company IHI Marine United, when IHI's shipbuilding and offshore division and Sumitomo Heavy's naval shipbuilding division got together to form a new company.
IHI's history goes back in 1853 when Nariakira Tokugawa the feudal lord of Mito established a shipyard in Tokyo (or Edo in those days) at a place called Ishikawajima, and thereafter has caught the attention of the industry by continuously leading the shipbuilding technology innovations including the builoding of the world's first VLCC.
Sumitomo's naval shipbuilding division marked its start back in 1897 with the establishment of the Uraga Dockyard by the advocated by Takeaki Enomoto, the Shogunate Warship Magistrate, and ever since, their achievement in the naval ship and specialised ships has been highly valued.
It is indeed a unique opportunity to see how the chemistry of combining the experiences and technological resources of the two divisions each with their significant background work to bring about a further leap in the capabilities of the Company.
We will continue to provide our customers with wide range of services backed by our corporate slogan “to contribute to the development of the society through marine technology” by strengthening our human resource assets, the most important element to our success. |
