Active silencers help solving the troubles of the neighborhood near construction sites in residential areas by reducing exhaust noise from construction machinery. They can easily be retrofitted onto various types of construction machinery.
Inverters have been playing important roles in the development of technologies to save energy consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile, Silicon Carbide (SiC) is attracting attention as a new semiconductor material that could replace silicon and boost energy efficiency. This article features IHI's original technologies for SiC drivers and compact, lightweight inverters that achieve both high efficiency and low noise.
We would like to introduce a project in which we are trying to find a breakthrough from the perspectives of outer space and information with the aim of reviving agriculture in Japan as it is facing many problems. "Field Touch" watches the growth of agricultural products from outer space to support agricultural production.
Predictive maintenance technologies are essential for efficient and safe plant operation. PASS valve inspection and diagnosis system has been applied as a new inspection method, where advanced ultrasonic techniques powerfully supports predictive maintenance planning.

The performance of centrifugal compressors strongly depends on their internal flow fields. Therefore, CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) is indispensable to the design of centrifugal compressors. CFD codes are usually validated by some representative data or compared with results calculated by other CFD codes, in order to ensure their accuracy. However, finding the estimation accuracy of any type of centrifugal compressor's performance requires continuously comparing experimental data obtained in the development of various centrifugal compressors with calculated results. This paper introduces one example of this by using a centrifugal compressor with an unpinched vaneless diffuser. In addition, flow behaviors in the inducer where CFD had qualitatively good agreement with experimental data were analyzed in detail.

As exhaust gas regulations are strengthened in the marine field, the application of gas fuel engines in marine vessels is attracting more and more attention as one way to satisfy the IMO NOx Tier III regulation. However, conventional gas fuel engines have some technical problems to be solved, such as low transient performance and lack of redundancy. Niigata's newly developed dual fuel engine, the "28AHX-DF," succeeded in improving transient performance, and has realized transient performance equivalent to Niigata's conventional diesel engine. Also, the "28AHX-DF" has the same level of redundancy as a diesel engine, thanks to the new dual fuel engine.

The ability to wirelessly transmit power over long distances is one of the strengths of a microwave power transmission system. In this study, we applied microwave power transmission technology to the power supply system of an electric aircraft in order to extend the flight time. A partial prototype based on the concept of this system and its design conditions was manufactured. A rectenna that had a center frequency of 5.8 GHz achieved the world's smallest weight to power output ratio. On the basis of the trial results and further study, we confirmed the feasibility of this system. These efforts and our future plans are described in this paper.

Optimal designs in terms of function and cost are required for the product development and improvement design processes. A methodology that results in high-value design is needed by designers, because they have to generate many different ideas and to select the good ideas. Value Engineering is one of management technique that attempts to fill this need and is good for a wide variety of ideas developed through teamwork and function-oriented thinking. In this study, through the effect of teamwork and function-oriented thinking on generated ideas will be verified from the data of a company seminar through quantitative handling of the variety of ideas generated through practical use of information entropy.

In Japan, the main goals of productivity improvement activities are "Fewer workers" and "Fewer man-hours." This is because the proportion of labor cost in the cost of manufacturing is relatively high, so the reduction of personnel and man-hours have a large effect on the cost. On the other hand, in Southeast Asia, the proportion of labor cost is lower at about 1/10(1) that of Japan. This means that the reduction of personnel and man-hours do not affect cost very much. Thus, in Southeast Asia, the more important goals are "Consistently good quality" and "Short production lead times." In this report, I will introduce some activities in Southeast Asia that are different from those in Japan.

IHI was awarded a contract to perform EP+SV works from Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in USA for a prismatic liquid argon storage tank (-189°C), which is to be used as prototype for the LBNE Project. Fermilab decided this contract due to IHI's membrane cryostat technologies from its EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) experience in in-ground LNG storage tanks. The structure for the prismatic liquid argon storage tanks, however, differs to that of in-ground membrane LNG storage tanks due to the shape of the argon storage tank being prismatic and the difference in the secondary barrier system used to maintain ambient temperature of the outer concrete tank in case of leakage from the membrane inner tank.
