A high-performance Rh structured catalyst with an applicable low-pressure drop was developed for use with compact high-efficiency microchannel natural-gas steam reformers. When this catalyst is used, it is possible to steam-reform methane with a very low-pressure drop (< 15 kPa) even at a higher space velocity (30 000 h-1) than that used with conventional reformers. The catalyst was confirmed to be chemically and physically stable throughout the course of a continuous test that was conducted for approximately 1 000 hours. The Damkohler number (Da) was calculated to predict the performance characteristics that would be obtained in commercial steam reformers. It was found that the catalyst could be operated without a gas diffusion limitation across the entire reactor.

IHI has developed the advanced operation and maintenance assistance system of the thermal power stations with customers by the latest digital technologies. The operation assistance services, in addition to the manual remote monitoring and consultation service by our operation experts, realize minimum unplanned shutdown period by the automatic diagnosis system. IHI aims to help determine the appropriate scope and schedule of the parts replacement with the maintenance assistance services. The system precisely estimates the residual life of the boiler parts to optimize the replacement interval. The three dimensional drawing system visualizes the repair and maintenance history of the parts to help judge which parts should be replaced.

The CBRN Early-Warning System, which was developed mainly for counterterrorism, detects toxic chemicals, biological agents, and radiation within its monitoring area in an accurate and real-time manner, and monitors them in a centralized fashion. This system serves as an information source for prevention of terrorism and provision of evacuation guidance in order to ensure the safety and security of large-scale events, large facilities, and communities.

The threat of bomb terrorism is growing year by year. To develop protective clothing and pursue research on how to treat blast injuries, we have developed a large shock tube exclusively for blast injury evaluation, making full use of structural strength simulation technology, fluid analysis simulation technology, and noise and vibration reduction technology.

The stationary type turbomachinery is expected to be more efficient and maintenance free and the turbomachinery mounted in vehicles is expected to be smaller, lighter and more controllable. In recent years, with the rapid advancement of power electronics technology, it has become a mega-trend to realize the electrification of high speed rotating machinery such as turbomachinery driven with direct drive motor system and mounted with oil-free bearings. This article introduces the elemental technologies for high speed rotating machinery: high speed motor technology, gas bearing technology and inverter technology.

Utilizing stem cells, such as iPS cells, in regenerative medicine requires the production of a large number of cells. IHI has developed an original automated cell culture system based on the plant engineering and fluid technologies that it has accumulated over many years. It is exploring worldwide needs in order to aim for acquiring the opportunities to apply the system to regenerative medicine.

Debonding defects in honeycomb sandwich panels can be detected by visualizing the inside of the structure nondestructively. However, it is difficult to obtain enough defective product images required for automatic detection by rule-based methods such as image processing. To solve the problem, we developed an automatic detection method with the Variational Auto-Encoder, which is a deep learning technique. With this method, even if only nondefective product images can be used as training data, we confirmed that an anomaly detection model could be generated and that the automatic detection could be performed. In addition, further high-precision detection model was realized by defining unique loss function in the training phase.

Recently, farmers are being encouraged to utilize idle fields for the planting of feed rice as domestic livestock feed. In response to this situation, a new all-in-one combination baler has been released. The Combination Baler can harvest feed rice as well as traditional feed crops, and form these into round bales as part of the same operation. With its compact and lightweight frame, this can operate stably even in small fields.
