We propose an economically excellent system that combines CO₂ capture technology with CO₂-to-valuable product conversion technology in order to accelerate the realization of a carbon recycling society in which the CO₂ in various gases present on the earth's surface is converted, as a carbon source, into valuable products, such as fuels and chemical products.

Ammonia is attracting attention as a hydrogen energy carrier for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Conversion of hydrogen into ammonia and liquefaction of ammonia allow hydrogen to be stored in a large quantity and to be transported to consumption areas from production areas with rich renewable energy resources. Furthermore, using ammonia as fuel for boiler turbine power generation and gas turbine power generation can promote the energy transition to carbon neutrality while utilizing existing infrastructure. The IHI Group has been providing important infrastructure technologies for energy value chains and proceeding with development of technologies and business opportunities to build an ammonia energy value chain.

In order to achieve a CO₂-free, recycling-oriented society, the Soma Lab was opened as a base for research and development of technologies to utilize hydrogen produced by using surplus renewable electricity. The Lab will promote effective use of renewable energy through the development of hydrogen production and utilization technologies. Research institutions and companies all over the world can make use of the Lab as a place for open innovation, which will contribute to regional revitalization through frequent visits of researchers or people interested in our efforts. We will also provide opportunities for local children to become familiar with science and energy-related technology such as hydrogen and its utilization through hands-on learning.

Liquid ammonia direct spray combustion technology was developed to use ammonia as fuel for gas turbines. As a result of the verification test, it was demonstrated that it is possible to burn liquid ammonia up to a co-firing ratio of 70% while suppressing the concentration of harmful substances in the exhaust gas. It was also confirmed that the emissions of unburned ammonia (NH₃) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) were below the regulation values in Japan, thus the environmental impact of operating the ammonia-fueled gas turbine was minor.

In order to promote the spread of renewable energy and the use of hydrogen in various ways worldwide, it is important to develop locally distributed energy system that utilizes hydrogen in addition to a global hydrogen and ammonia value chain. This report describes the features and issues of hydrogen-based distributed energy, and introduces recent examples of IHI's activities, such as the development of a "water electrolysis-based energy management system" in the Hibikinada area of Kitakyushu in Japan.

Biomass fuel is practically co-fired as a carbon-neutral fuel with coal in coal-fired thermal power plants to reduce CO₂ emissions. In Japan, various actions toward biomass single firing are currently promoted for the achievement of the 2050 carbon neutrality target. As for a biomass fired boiler, however, the ash deposition on boiler tubes may accelerate the reduction of thermal efficiency and the corrosion of the tubes because the biomass ash has chlorine and high alkali content despite its low ash. In order to develop countermeasures against ash deposition and corrosion, we conducted an ash deposition test with a horizontal furnace and a drop tube furnace and a corrosion test with an electric furnace and obtained a better understanding about their characteristics.

IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd. has supplied co-generation systems equipped with a gas engine to various sites. The spark ignition lean-burn gas engine 28AGS is a main model in late years. This model has features that it is highly efficient and emits a smaller amount of CO₂, a greenhouse gas, with stabilization technology for combustion with the lean air-fuel mixture. In 2020, the gas engine co-generation system, which was composed of the gas engine 28AGS and the binary generator manufactured by IHI, was installed at IHI Yokohama Works and the site is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 1400 tons/year. This paper introduces the outline of the system.

Demand for fuel cells and electrolyzers is increasing toward decarbonization. We will introduce the coating technologies for bipolar plates which form the electrochemical cells in fuel cells and electrolyzers, and the efforts that IHI Ionbond and IHI Hauzer are making to reduce the cost and extend the life of fuel cells and electrolyzers.
