Winner of ITS2022 Innovation of the Year Award
~ Japan's first electric propulsion tugboat

IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd.
e5 Lab Inc.

On September 29th, IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd. (hereafter, IPS) announced that the electric propulsion tugboat being jointly developed and built with e5 Lab Inc. (hereafter, e5 Lab), Tokyo Kisen Co., Ltd., and Kanagawa Dockyard Co., Ltd., was awarded the International Tug & Salvage Awards 2022 Innovation of the Year Award (*1).

For this electric propulsion system, IPS, as an integrator, put together a platform (a combination of a large-capacity lithium-ion battery and a diesel generator) proposed by e5 Lab. This system achieves low and zero emissions of CO2, NOx, SOx, smoke, etc. emitted from the ship, reduces the environmental burden, and suppresses noise and vibration, improving the working environment of the crew and considers the environment around Yokohama and Kawasaki Port.
At present, Japan does not have an electric propulsion tugboat that does not use a diesel engine and does not use an intermediate shaft. When this tugboat is completed, it will be the first in Japan. The four companies are working toward completion in December 2022.
The research and development and construction of this ship were funded by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's Agency for Natural Resources and Energy's Subsidy for Promotion of Further Transport Efficiency Utilizing AI/IoT, etc. It has been adopted as a subsidized project.

We will continue to contribute to the sustainable development of the shipping industry and the realization of a zero-carbon society.
