1959 The first turbocharger for automobiles was released

In 1954, development of a radial type turbocharger started at Ishikawajima Shibaura Turbine and R18 type was completed in 1956. This is the starting point for current IHI Vehicular Turbochargers. In the beginning of 1957, this R-type turbocharger began to be supplied to diesel railcars of former Japan National Railways and industrial engines such as construction machinery, and in 1959 R14 type was applied for buses and trucks, becoming our first turbocharger for automobiles.
