With a growing momentum to unify emission and fuel economy assessment methods set individually in each country and region, WLTP (Worldwide harmonized Light duty driving Test Procedure) was introduced starting in Europe in 2017. The new test-cycle, called WLTC (Worldwide harmonized Light duty driving Test Cycle), which is a part of WLTP, includes highway driving mode, leading to higher average and maximum speeds. This change of test cycle resulted in a trend to rectify extreme downsizing. IHI released a new turbocharger, which realized further improvement of transient response without loss of rated power.
