IHI Signed EPC Contract for 2,000MW Ultra Super-Critical Coal-Fired Power Plant in Malaysia

Tokyo, September 2, 2014 --- IHI Corporation (“IHI”, headquarters: Koto-ku, Tokyo; President& CEO: Tamotsu Saito), as the leader of the consortium, has been jointly awarded a contract for the engineering, procurement and construction of the largest ultra super-critical (*1) (“USC”) coal-fired power plant in Malaysia (1,000MW x 2 units) on full turnkey basis by Jimah East Power Sdn Bhd established by 1Malaysia Development Berhad which is wholly owned by the Minister of Finance Incorporated, and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. The project is to construct USC coal-fired power plant in Mukim Jimah in Negeri Sembilan, located approximately 60km south of Kuala Lumpur, and its commercial operation is scheduled in 2018 for Unit1 and 2019 for Unit 2, respectively.

Economic growth in Malaysia leads to increase of electricity demand and accordingly, annual increasing rate of the electricity demand until 2020 is expected to be 3% on average. Besides, the objective of Government of Malaysia is to ensure the compatibility between the industrial growth and low carbon society. USC technology adopted for this project would enable the plant to achieve the high efficiency through extremely high steam temperature and pressure, which results in reduction of fuel consumption as well as CO2 emission.

IHI will be responsible for supply and installation work of boilers and their auxiliaries, and technical & commercial coordination as the consortium leader. Toshiba Corporation will be responsible for supply and installation work of steam turbines, generators and their auxiliaries, and a part of civil work. Hyundai Engineering Co., Ltd and Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd, each Korean major engineering and construction companies, will be jointly responsible for supply and installation work of the balance of plant, and a part of civil work.

IHI has rich experience in supply and construction of coal-fired power plants in Malaysia, and has delivered 9 units of boiler plants in total (total output: 5,100MW) including Jimah coal-fired thermal power plant (700 MW x 2 units) adjacent to the site being planned for this project, Tanjung Bin coal-fired thermal power plant (700MW x 3 units) and so on.

To realize stable and efficient power supply in Southeast Asia where remarkable economic growth is expected, IHI will continue to supply power generation equipment and system mainly including boiler with high efficiency and low emission.

(*1) Ultra-Super Critical: Steam temperature at least 593℃, boiler steam pressure at least 24.1MPa.
