IHI Awarded Indonesia’s Ultra-supercritical Boiler for the Lontar Extension Coal Fired Steam Power Plant -Introducing Japan’s state-of-the-art middle-sized boiler technology into Indonesia-

Tokyo, April 11, 2016 --- IHI Corporation (“IHI”, headquarters: Koto-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Tsugio Mitsuoka) has been awarded a contract to supply one coal-fired boiler unit from Sumitomo Corporation (headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Kuniharu Nakamura), for a Ultra-supercritical (*1)(“USC”) Coal-Fired power project (315MWx1 unit).

This boiler is for the construction of a 4th Unit to the Lontar power station (located approximately 80km west of Jakarta) which is being developed by PT.PLN (Persero), an Indonesian state owned electricity company. The 4th Unit will be built next to the existing units 1 to 3, and is expected to start operations in 2019. IHI was awarded this boiler after full evaluation of its extensive track record of USC boilers, its knowhow and manufacturing technologies as well as its high performance operational track record both in Japan and in the global market including Asian region.

In order to respond to the increasing electricity demand as a result of rapid economic growth and societal development, Indonesia is implementing its “35GW power plants development plans”, with plans to install 35GW of additional power generating facilities over 5 years from 2015 to 2019. This project, based in the suburbs of Jakarta, is expected to contribute as part of the early source of electricity supply.

The USC boiler adopted for this project will enable the plant to achieve high efficiency through extremely high steam pressure and temperature, resulting in the reduction of fuel consumption as well as CO2 emissions. By taking the USC boiler with Japan’s highly efficient coal firing technologies, and downsizing it, we are able to simultaneously meet the medium capacity energy needs of the country whilst reducing the environmental footprint.

IHI has a wealth of experience in providing highly efficient coal-fired boilers including the world’s highest steam conditions USC boilers and air quality control system all over the world. In addition, IHI Aioi Works as a mother factory has the demonstration test facilities to promote the further improvement of Clean Coal Technology; IHI continues to strive to improve boiler efficiency and develop even more eco-friendly technologies.

To realize stable and efficient electricity supply in the global market and countries expecting remarkable economic growth over the coming years, such as Indonesia, IHI will continue to supply power generation equipment and systems, primarily consisting of boilers boasting high efficiency and quality as well as low emissions.
