IHI and NEDO Completes World’s First 100kW Class Demonstration Test of Ocean Current Power Generation – Acquiring data such as power output and attitude stability in the waters for practical applications –

New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization

In August of 2017, IHI Corporation (Head Office: Koto-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Tsugio Mitsuoka; hereinafter, “IHI”) and New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization(hereinafter, “NEDO”) completed a demonstration test of the world’s first 100kW class subsea floating type ocean current power generation system in Kuchinoshima, Kagoshima Prefecture.

The demonstration test was conducted by installing a demonstration machine in the Kuroshio Current near the Tokara Islands. As a result, the system generated power of approximately 30kW at the current velocity of 1.0m/s, in addition to collecting data for future practical applications, such as performance validation of the autonomous control system that stabilizes its underwater position, as well as methods for installation and removal work. Furthermore, the towing test that was conducted before the demonstration test achieved a rated power output of 100kW at 1.5m/s.

NEDO expects ocean current power generation, which provides large amounts of energy with few fluctuations, to be a new source of renewable energy. IHI Corporation aims for practical application of the subsea floating type ocean current power generation system after 2020.
