Expansion of solid biomass fuel business utilizing palm waste - Contributing to the Malaysian palm industry and promoting renewable energy -

IHI Corporation(Headquarters :Koto Ward, Tokyo; President: Tsugio Mitsuoka, hereinafter "IHI") has established IHI SOLID BIOMASS MALAYSIA SDN. BHD. (hereinafter “ISBM”) in Malaysia in order to fully expand the manufacturing, export and sale of solid biomass fuel derived from Palm EFB (Empty Fruit Bunch), known as EFB pellets.

Large quantities of EFB generated during the extraction of palm oil tends to be discarded and unused, resulting in soil contamination and methane gas release due to the high content of moisture, ash and salt making EFB vulnerable to rot. IHI has established a method to convert and mass-produce EFB into high-quality low-ash pellets, making effective use of EFB as solid biomass fuel.

Furthermore, IHI has developed and is piloting a Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) treatment system as well as pellets manufactured from discarded Oil Palm Trunks (OPT) in Malaysia, in an effort to utilize palm oil production waste and reduce the environmental impact of the palm industry.

In addition, IHI along with major Malaysian printing company Nextgreen Global Berhad (Managing Director: Dato’ Lim Thiam Huat, hereinafter "NGGB") and Nomura Holdings, Inc., (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President and Group CEO: Koji Nagai) have signed a memorandum of understanding on the collaboration of utilizing of palm residue. With this memorandum, the three parties will conduct a business performance evaluation on collaborating in the production of EFB-derived paper pulp and biomass fuel. Collaboration between the three parties towards the further development of NGGB’s environmentally friendly industrial estate which makes use of palm waste, the Green Technology Park, will also be considered.

Through these efforts, IHI aims to improve the sustainability of the palm industry, one of the major industries in Malaysia, along with contributing to the stable supply of solid biomass fuel, of which demand is expected to rise greatly in Japan.

The IHI Group is actively participating in the advancement of fuel production and combustion technologies in the biomass power generation field, as well as further improving the efficiency of power generation equipment and developing CO2 recovery technologies to contribute towards solving global environment and energy problems.
