Construction of the Tsukiji Bridge
The Tsukiji Bridge between the Tsukiji market and Kachidoki was constructed in three large blocks. The ground assembly was performed at a factory, and the blocks were transported by barge to the site by sea, for installation in three operations using a 3,000-tonne floating crane (the largest that could pass under Rainbow Bridge). After installing the large blocks on both sides, the center block (122 m, 2,800 tonnes) was installed last.
During construction, we obtained the cooperation of relevant parties to stop passage at the mouth of the Sumida River estuary and tension the mooring lines of the floating crane across the entire range of the Sumida River. We then operated the floating crane to install the large blocks.
The three times the floating crane suspending the enormous blocks entered between the rows of buildings in the heart of the city provided a major spectacle that changed the cityscape in a single day. The construction was completed safely while many people looked on.
