Steel Bridge Construction Contract Signed for Rail-freight Bridges on the Dedicated Freight Corridor between Delhi and Mumbai
- Largest Project to Date Funded by an ODA Loan from JICA -

-August 22, 2015-

On August 21, a joint venture between IHI Infrastructure Systems Co., Ltd. (IIS, Headquarters: Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture; President: Akira Inoue) and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Limited, the largest general contractor in India, signed a contract for steel bridge packages 15A, 15B, and 15C on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor between Delhi and Mumbai with the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited under the jurisdiction of the Indian Ministry of Railways.

This project consists of a total of 12 steel bridges ranging from 60 m to 1,400 m in length and five concrete bridges ranging from 7 m to 21 m in length along sections totaling 555 km at each end of the 1,500 km high-speed western dedicated freight corridor that connects the capital Delhi with Mumbai, the gateway to the Indian West Coast. The steel bridges are truss bridges (standard span approximately 48 m) constructed by the launching construction method using a launching machine*1, which is a widely used construction method in Japan. Construction starts at the end of September 2015 and is scheduled to be completed at the end of September 2019.

As the freight transport volume in India increases year by year, strengthening the freight transport capacity by increasing speed and capacity is an urgent issue. The project ordered this time is a core project of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor Initiative*2 promoted jointly by the Japanese and Indian governments, and it symbolizes Japan-India economic cooperation. Construction of the entire Western Dedicated Freight Corridor is the largest ODA loan project to date, exceeding 450 billion yen. Opening the entire corridor will significantly reduce transportation times and should contribute to better efficiency of the logistics network and to economic development in India.

IIS has a wealth of experience in handling large bridge construction projects. It also has great experience with building large steel bridges overseas, including the Nhat Tan Bridge (Vietnam–Japan Friendship Bridge) in Vietnam and the Izmit Bay Crossing Bridge that is under construction in Turkey. To contribute to the development of other countries through the development of social infrastructure, we will continue to promote overseas bridge ordering activities in the future.

Overview Construction of 12 steel bridges and five small concrete bridges

*1 Launching construction method using a launching machine
A bridge girder is assembled and the launching machine is attached to the tip. Jacks are used to feed out the bridge girder horizontally. After launching the first bridge girder, subsequent girders are connected sequentially. After extending the bridge girder to its target position, the launching machine is removed and the bridge girder is lowered to the same height as the bridge height at the front and rear and connected to the bridge girder at the front and rear.

*2 Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC)
Construction of a dedicated freight corridor between Delhi and Mumbai (ODA loan: 450 billion yen). This is a Japan-India cooperative regional development initiative to develop infrastructure such as industrial parks, logistics bases, power plants, roads, ports, housing, and commercial facilities in surrounding areas through private investment entities. Developing industrial, physical and social infrastructure is expected to create new jobs and double the volumes of industrial output and export. The project is being realized by co-establishing a project development fund led by Japan and India based on support from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, and through cooperative systems such as ODA loans.
