We interviewed a company representative regarding some background and effects of installing the Leaf Filter (CFR Type) to be used in the manufacturing process for a newly developed organosilicon compound.

Background

Q What were the background and challenges that brought you to consider purchasing the filtering machine?

In the process of manufacturing organosilicon compounds, adsorption treatment using requiring a large amount of adsorbent is necessary.
Previously, 2 to 3 workers performed the replacement of filter paper and cake discharge in the filtration process using a small manual filter, following the adsorption treatment. However, as the treatment volume increased, the workload became excessive, making improvements in efficiency and safety an urgent priority.

Determining Factors

Q Please tell us the reasons why you chose IHI’s filter to solve a variety of challenges you might have. What were the deciding factor for you to choose our product?

We have been using an IHI Leaf Filter in a different plant for about 20 years with a proven track record of stable operation. For this specific application, it was essential to have equipment capable of automatic discharge while remaining closed. The IHI Leaf Filter met this condition, thus we determined this was the optimal model. During the actual machine test prior to the installation, we received IHI Rotating Machinery Engineering technical support to confirm the specifications in detail, including a selection of wire mesh and filter cloths. Ultimately, three points were the deciding factors for the installation: the overall usability of the machine, the sense of security provided by the support system available before and after installation, and the proven track record of the existing equipment.

Outcome of Application

Q Were your challenges resolved after installing IHI’s filter? How is the filter evaluated in your company?

The automatization of cake discharge (Centrifugal) due to the installation of IHI Leaf Filter enabled a significant reduction in the previously required labor, such as replacement of filter paper, disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly. This lightened the burden on operators. As a result, operations became more efficient.
In the tests using model liquid during an initial operation, we struggled to adjust leaks and inability to obtain clear filtration. However, with the accurate advice and on-site support from IHI Rotating Machinery Engineering technicians, we reviewed the operating method and achieved a stable filtration process. Consequently, we could complete the production of newly developed product to meet the expected schedule and operate without any quality issues. In the several years since installation, the main body of the IHI Leaf Filter has experienced no major issues. The manufacturer performs periodic inspections promptly, providing us with peace of mind regarding maintenance.

Future prospects

Q Please tell us your future prospects and visions.

As the solution of the labor shortage, we intend to pursue further automation of the production process, and to improve efficiency. We look forward to the continuing technical and maintenance support from the IHI Rotating Machinery Engineering. Furthermore, we will continue an active information exchange, aiming to build a more efficient and safer production system.

IHI Leaf Filter is capable of fully automatic filtration.

IHI Leaf Filter is a horizontal pressure leaf filter where the leaf (the filtering element) is arranged horizontally relative to the shaft in the pressure-resistant vessel. After the filtration process—which includes liquid filling, recirculation, filtration, and drainage—the shaft is driven by a motor to rotate. The cake formed on each leaf is then removed by centrifugal force and automatically discharged from the bottom of the vessel. Additionally, all residual liquid is filtered by the IHI Leaf Filter's special residual filtration mechanism, enabling complete filtration of all slurry produced in a single batch. The product is widely adopted in manufacturing processes for crystalline and powdered products in various industries, including chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food, and oils/fats.
