Production of the synthetic gas from unused resources, lignite to chemical feedstock for fertilizer, Start of Twin IHI Gasifier (TIGAR®) demonstration operation - Accelerating activities of the effective utilization of lignite for early market entry -

Jakarta, February 26, 2015 – IHI Corporation (Headquarter: Tokyo, Koto-ku/ CEO: Mr. Tamotsu Saito) has announced the successful completion of construction and beginning of the operation of Twin IHI Gasifier (TIGAR®) prototype plant, its coal feed rate is 50 tons per day.
The prototype plant is constructed in Kujang Factory of PT Pupuk Indonesia Holding Company, which is the largest state-owned fertilizer company in Indonesia. This plant is located in Cikampek, 75 kilometers southeast next to Jakarta. The commissioning of TIGAR® prototype plant has been finished. And inauguration ceremony was held on 26th February.
At the ceremony Mr. Toshihiko Fujii, Deputy Commissioner for International Affairs Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, his excellency Mr. Yasuaki Tanizaki, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Indonesia, and many participants from Indonesian government delivered a complimentary address to IHI.
From now on, this prototype plant will start demonstration tests for the confirmation of operability and durability for 2 years. Within 2015, IHI is aiming at starting sales activities for commercial plant which will be capable to feed 500 – 1000 tons of lignite per day.

Lignite, which is one of the low rank coals which contains high moisture, exist ample reserves at a moderate price, and thus effective utilization will be expected in the world energy market. IHI is accelerating its efforts to utilize lignite efficiently by the development of TIGAR®, by the development of coal pre-drying system and the acquisition of a German company, named Steinmüller Engineering GmbH, which has rich experiences in lignite fired boilers.
IHI’s TIGAR® technology is based on a mature fluidized bed boiler technology. IHI started the development of TIGAR® in 2004, with subsidies by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan from 2010.

Advantages of TIGAR® technology are the following:

1.  Lower CAPEX and simple Operation & Maintenance
  a. Lower pressure and lower temperature in operating condition
2. High reliability and availability
  a. Based on mature fluidized bed technologies
3.  Multi-application
  a. For Chemical feedstock, Substitute natural gas, Fuel etc.
4. Multi-fuel application
  a. Low rank coal, biomass and their co-utilization

IHI is striving to solve environmental and energy challenges on a global level by utilization of unused resources such as lignite, by high efficient coal-fired power plants and by our business activities in the field of resources, energy and environment, including CO2 capturing technology development.

(*1) lignite
Lignite is one of the low rank coals. There are ample reserves of lignite in Southeast Asia, Europe and Australia. Yet its utilization is limited due to high moisture and lower heating value content.
