IHI Infrastructure Systems Announces the Signing of the Contract, Replacing the Hanger Cables of Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge Project in Turkey
IHI Infrastructure Systems Co., Ltd. (headquartered in Sakai-shi, Osaka; Susumu ISHIHARA, President; hereinafter “IIS”) announced that, jointly with MAKYOL İnşaat Sanayi Turizm ve Ticaret A.Ş., (headquartered in Istanbul; hereinafter “MAKYOL”), a leading general constructor in Turkey, has signed a contract for the Replacing the Hanger Cables of Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge Project with the owner of the bridge, GENERAL DIRECTORATE OF HIGHWAYS (herein after “KGM”).
The main purpose of this project is to replace hanger cables (which holds the deck of suspension bridge) of Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, which is spanning the Bosphorus strait. Furthermore, maintenance works on installed materials of the bridge, including asphalts renewals of inspection paths and repair of handrails and guardrails are also in the scope of this project. The construction period is expected to last 30 months.
Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge was completed by IIS (formally IHI) with Japanese ODA loan, is attaining its 33rd year. While IIS was conducting maintenance of Faith Sultan Mehmet Bridge during the “Construction Works of Major Repairs and Structural Reinforcement of the Bosphorus and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridges” from 2013, damaged hanger cables were detected, and some of severely damaged cables were replaced as an emergency repair. After this detection, overall inspection of hanger cables was conducted, and as a result KGM became aware that the hanger cable replacement work is necessary for all hanger cables of this bridge and therefore it has decided to execute the project.
With an expected demand growth in repairing and maintenance works locally and globally in the bridge construction field, IIS will continue to contribute to the development of many countries through the expansion of its bridge business and development of social infrastructure.
