2022 New Year’s Greetings from the President (Summary)

On the morning of January 5, the first day of work, Hiroshi Ide, President of IHI Corporation, delivered New Year's greetings to all IHI Group employees. The summary is as follows.

―“Create a World Where Nature and Technology Work in Unity” by tirelessly tackling social issues―

The COVID-19 pandemic continued to affect us all in 2021. The Omicron strain of the virus emerged just as intensive vaccination programs were winding down. The year also saw efforts accelerate to tackle climate change. In November 2021, participants in the United Nations Climate Change Conference “COP26” reached a consensus.

To overcome these uncertain times, we need to commit to working and collaborating with people across the globe. I would accordingly like to present three priorities to propel progress for the IHI Group in coming years.

1. “Turn Headwinds into Tailwinds”

The environmental changes I touched on are greatly hampering the Group’s civil aero engine, boiler, and other existing businesses. It is important to transform those businesses into drivers for value creation. Exploring ways to resolve new social issues stemming from environmental changes will fuel innovation.

Our efforts in the energy field exemplify what I mean. There, we have focused on ammonia for more than a decade, developing combustion technology to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. This technology is in the global spotlight as a driver for tackling climate change.

We are in an era of profound uncertainty. It is precisely because of such unpredictability that the IHI Group should create new markets with timely new products and services that offer exceptional added value for customers and the economy. Let us strive to address social issues.

2. “Tirelessly Tackle Social Issues”

“IHI Group’s ESG Management” was announced in November 2021.

ESG management is about enhancing corporate value by giving full consideration to the environment and society, ultimately materializing a sustainable economy. Although the word “ESG” itself did not exist when IHI was established, we have timelessly concentrated on resolving contemporary social issues. ESG management has been and will remain the essence of the IHI Group.

We work on researching and developing technologies to cut carbon dioxide emissions, manufacturing and selling products that leverage such technologies, and making our factories and offices environmentally efficient. The work of each one of us shapes “IHI Group’s ESG Management”. Let us continue to address prevailing social issues and renew our commitment to making ESG pivotal to generating new value.

3. “Fully Empower Individuals”

We need innovative ideas and technologies to produce new value. We must accordingly create conditions conducive to embracing ideas from our diverse people to drive innovation. Another benefit of accepting different experiences, values, and perspectives is that we can more flexibly overcome the unexpected. These qualities are important to make our organization more resilient amid change.

We will enhance the IHI Group’s corporate value if we all accept diversity and find fulfillment in life and work. Let us bring together our individual strengths, respect diversity, and reach our full potential.

“Embarking on the final year of Project Change”

We seek to generate growth businesses under “Project Change” by setting our sustainability goal, “To Create a World Where Nature and Technology Work in Unity”.

First, please assess all the work you do without concern for convention or the scope of your responsibilities. Then, explore how you would approach your job as if it were your own business and set about thinking and acting autonomously.

In closing, I would like to express my deep appreciation to everyone endeavoring to keep our operations running while preventing infections from spreading. Let us continue to strengthen occupational health and safety measures in the year ahead.
