IHI and Subsidiary Sign EPC Contract for Demonstration Plant at Australian Carbon-Free Hydrogen Project

cs

IHI Corporation announced today that Australian electricity provider CS Energy Ltd has awarded subsidiary IHI Engineering Australia Pty Ltd an engineering procurement and construction contract for the Kogan Renewable Hydrogen Demonstration Plant (HDP). This project will be adjacent to the Kogan Creek Power Station in Queensland, Australia.

The project will produce green hydrogen through electrolysis powered by a nearby solar farm and through battery energy storage. It will sell surplus electricity to the power grid.

This project originated in December 2020 with a joint feasibility study between CS Energy and IHI Corporation. That effort evaluated the technical and economic feasibility of a renewable hydrogen facility.

IHI looks forward to working closely with CS Energy through this new demonstration plant to accelerate decarbonization in Australia. IHI will leverage its expertise in local energy production and consumption management systems technologies from developing and operating the Soma IHI Green Energy Center in Fukushima Prefecture. That facility began operations in 2018. IHI will also draw on its extensive successes in delivering engineering, procurement, and construction projects in Australia and around the world.

CS Energy is a Queensland Government-owned energy company based in Brisbane with a trading portfolio of more than 3,500 megawatts. IHI has served CS Energy for many years, including by constructing two generating units for that portfolio and by partnering in the Callide Oxyfuel Project, which demonstrated carbon capture technology at Callide A Power Station.

As Australia’s northeastern state, Queensland enjoys abundant sunshine and a close proximity to Asia that positions it well to develop a large green hydrogen production industry for domestic and export markets.

The IHI Group will develop technologies to employ energy from hydrogen and ammonia and build a carbon-free value chain to help create a circular economy and foster community power development for a more sustainable planet.
