IHI launched a service to visualize supply chain data and provide tracking information of marine traffic using AI technology
-the world’s first electronic customs clearance service-

IHI Jet Service Co., Ltd. (IJS), a group company of IHI Corporation, has started to provide a service of visualizing and tracing overseas supply chain data aimed at improved efficiency of customs clearing procedures, prevention of delay in marine transportation and reduction of import expenses.

This service uses a system to visualize vessel’s data by combining its real-time location data obtained from AIS*1 system using AI technology with trade data for customs clearing procedures and predict the expected arrival times of vessels.

The purpose of this service is to visualize overseas supply chain data and provide containership tracking information through use of IJS’s satellite information services*2. The system used in the service combines real time accurate containership location data and AI-based data analysis of expected arrival times of containerships with the electronic customs clearance platform*3 of HAKOVO PTE Ltd.*4     Implementing customs clearance procedures without being affected by the delay in the marine transportation schedule allows the smooth delivery of goods to destinations and the reduction of congestion in ports and harbors.

The service enables users to exactly understand the arrival times of containerships and complete customs procedures within the planned period to avoid delays in transportation of goods.

Users who work especially in industries requiring the accurate procurement distribution and delivery management of production, machine and construction  materials in factories can arrange to secure freight vehicles travelling on land and delivery as scheduled. This will also save unnecessary costs arising from delays in marine transportation schedule.

This is the world’s first service combining the use of AI-analyzed transportation data of containerships and the electronic customs clearance procedures using AI.

Currently, global major ports face substantial disruption due to the impact of COVID-19 on marine container transportation, as evidenced by the instability in the balance of demand and supply of marine containers and the delays in container transport schedule caused by disruptions in the ports due to the imposition and lifting of lockdown restrictions. Furthermore, there is a concern of increasing time and costs for import clearance procedures in the Philippines due to the complicated import clearing procedures.

JETRO started to support efforts in 2020 in which Japanese companies collaborate with ASEAN countries and companies and use innovation such as digital technology in order to solve economic and social issues between Japan and ASEAN countries. IJS implemented a demonstration project of the service in the Philippines in August, 2021, which was adopted in the second Asia Digital Transformation promotion project in Japan and ASEAN organized by JETRO. It confirmed that the customs clearance procedures had been performed accurately without any delay, which led the service to be launched this time.

This demonstration project was implemented for transportation and import of construction materials in the Davao Bypass project in the Philippines which was supported by Japan’s official development assistance (ODA) program. Going forward, IJS will deploy the service in Southeast Asia such as the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand, as well as in the Middle East.

IJS will continue to mobilize IHI’s technology and knowhow of space and the ocean and provide the value-added services of marine transportation and maritime security services that use satellite information.
