IHI to Verify Ammonia Co-Firing and Mono-Firing Technologies at Indonesian Thermal Power Plants

CS

IHI Corporation (IHI) will conclude a memorandum of understanding today with PT Pembangkitan Jawa-Bali (PJB) to jointly verify the application of ammonia and biomass co-firing technologies and mono-firing technologies, and their economic feasibility. IHI and PJB formalized their agreement during the Asian Green Growth Partnership Ministerial Meeting Public-Private Forum, being held by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. PJB is a wholly owned subsidiary of PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), Indonesia’s state-owned electric power company. IHI and PJB will conduct technical studies on boilers at PJB’s Gresik Thermal Power Plant and others with a view to ammonia co-firing and mono-firing down the track.

The Indonesian government, PLN, and PJB look to employ carbon-neutral fuels at thermal power plants to attain net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2060. PLN, PJB, and IHI accordingly discussed specific measures for thermal power plants. A particular focus was ammonia, whose combustion does not produce carbon dioxide. Another was technologies for applying biomass at thermal power plants, a promising renewable energy source for Indonesia. These deliberations culminated in the accord.

The IHI and PJB initiative will be in line with the objectives of the Asia Energy Transition Initiative, which the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry announced on May 24, 2021. IHI will draw on this work to showcase ways to attain carbon neutrality across ASEAN countries and throughout the world and drive a transition to sustainable energy. By offering diverse models for tapping carbon-neutral fuels, IHI aims to foster the swift adoption of fuel ammonia and other carbon-neutral fuels across economies and help alleviate environmental impacts worldwide by offering high quality infrastructure.
