IHI Has Joined the Hydrogen Council as a Steering Member
-Creating a Low-Carbon Society Globally Through Hydrogen and Ammonia-
IHI Corporation is pleased to announce that we have joined the Hydrogen Council, one of the world's largest hydrogen-related entities, as a Steering member to play a central role in the Council's strategic decision-making process.
Launched at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2017, the Hydrogen Council is the world's first CEO-led global body of activity and currently includes around 150 companies representing the hydrogen value chain. It aims to increase visibility and awareness of hydrogen as a key tool for decarbonising the energy system, identify and resolve obstacles to realising the huge potential of hydrogen solutions, and work with key stakeholders, including policymakers, to make recommendations.
It is well known that ammonia is widely used as a feedstock for production of fertilizers and chemical products. However, the current volume of ammonia production is relatively small considering projected demand for ammonia as fuel for power generation and as a hydrogen carrier. In order for the power generation industry and others to fully harness ammonia as a tool for decarbonization, it is necessary to expand ammonia production, transportation, and storage infrastructure. This infrastructure expansion needs to occur on a global scale and can only be achieved through international collaboration by stakeholders.
IHI is using its advanced technologies, including its fuel ammonia related technologies, to support decarbonization throughout the world. As part of our efforts, IHI is focused on building value chains for ammonia and hydrogen, and we consider that through the Hydrogen Council initiative, we can together promote the widespread use of hydrogen and ammonia as safe, affordable, and effective tools for rapid decarbonization of electricity production, transportation, and other key industrial applications.
