IHI to Participate in Feasibility Study of Green Energy-Based Power System in Indonesia

IHI Corporation announced today that it has concluded a memorandum of understanding with PT PLN Nusantara Power (PLN NP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Indonesian state-owned power company PLN, and the Indonesia Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Energy (IFHE). The three parties will discuss the feasibility of building a local production and consumption-based power system that employs green energy. The announcement is in keeping with efforts of the Asia Zero Emissions Community’s public-private investment forum, or AZEC. Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry set up that body to foster joint efforts in Asia to eliminate carbon dioxide emissions.

Other wide-ranging explorations of decarbonization issues under this initiative will include jointly looking into co-firing or mono-firing ammonia and biomass at PLN NP thermal power plants and enhancing performances at existing thermal power plants. IHI will draw largely on its domestic experience in providing information on these decarbonization-related technologies, leveraging the expertise of PLN NP and IFHE in pushing ahead with the above studies in Indonesia.

In October 2022, IHI initiated Southeast Asia’s first ammonia co-firing facility at an operational power in Indonesia, and is studying ammonia co-firing and mono-firing. It is also collaborating with Institut Teknologi Bandung in Indonesia to research using agricultural residues as biomass fuel to lower environmental impacts. IHI and PLN NP announced at the 7th Japan-Indonesia Energy Forum on March 6 that their initiatives will be first steps toward decarbonizing Indonesia.

At AZEC, which debuted this year, IHI President and Chief Executive Officer Hiroshi Ide outlined the company’s efforts to establish an ammonia supply chain would help materialize that organization’s vision. This is to balance decarbonization policies and economic growth in line with regional realities. Through these studies, IHI will help Indonesia decarbonize and lower global environmental impacts by providing high-quality infrastructure.
