IHI and EGAT to commence studies on Decarbonization in Thailand
―Contributing to decarbonization through battery energy storage systems and fuel conversion to ammonia―
IHI has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), a state-owned electric power company in Thailand, to study the construction of battery energy storage systems and fuel conversion to ammonia, which will contribute to decarbonization. The MOU was announced in conjunction with the Asia Zero Emissions Community (AZEC) Public-Private Investment Forum hosted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).
Based on this MOU, IHI and EGAT will study the possibility of battery energy storage system application in Thailand in order to further stabilize the power grid in response to the increase in renewable energy generation. They will also study the possibility of fuel conversion to ammonia. IHI will mainly organize the advantages of each applicable technology and the issues to be addressed at the time of introduction together with EGAT.
Thailand has set an interim target of 40% reduction of CO₂ emissions by 2030, aiming for net zero CO₂ emissions by 2065. The two companies have concluded this MOU in order to study and implement measures to achieve this goal.
At the AZEC Public-Private Investment Forum, which was held for the first time this time, Hiroshi Ide, President and CEO of IHI, introduced IHI's efforts to establish a fuel ammonia supply chain that will contribute to the realization of this framework. Through this study, IHI will contribute to the promotion of decarbonization in Thailand and the reduction of global environmental burden by providing high-quality infrastructure.
