IHI and TNB Power Generation Partnership to Create Decarbonization Roadmap in Coal-Fired Power Stations in Malaysia

IHI Corporation (IHI) and TNB Power Generation Sdn. Bhd. (TNB Genco), Malaysia’s largest power producer, have finished its joint feasibility study and agreed to move to the next step in relation to TNB Genco’s coal-fired power stations. This feasibility study aimed to develop the decarbonization roadmap for TNB Genco’s coal-fired power stations by applying IHI’s ammonia and biomass combustion technology and to study its economic feasibility following the MoU which, both parties signed in February 2023. TNB Genco is a wholly owned subsidy of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Malaysia’s national utility company.

The Malaysian government and TNB look to utilize carbon-neutral fuels at thermal power plants to attain net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. TNB Genco has set a more progressive target accordingly, decreasing carbon intensity to 0.35 t-CO₂/MWh by 2035. IHI and TNB Genco had many discussions about the potential to introduce ammonia whose combustion does not produce carbon dioxide and/or to apply biomass, a promising renewable energy source for South-East Asia to meet the target as the concrete way to decarbonize at thermal power plants. And as a result of this joint feasibility study, both parties have reached an agreement to materialize the decarbonization roadmap rapidly.
As a next step, IHI and TNB Genco plan to conduct a basic design for the implementation of ammonia and biomass small-scale combusting and a further feasibility study of large-scale ammonia and biomass combusting. In parallel with the above-mentioned implementation, IHI and TNB Genco will proceed with capability-building development to accelerate the introduction of ammonia and biomass combustion technologies in the existing power stations more smoothly and effectively.
IHI contributes to the reduction of CO₂ emissions from coal-fired power stations with technologies for converting to clean fuels such as ammonia and biomass and provides various solutions suitable for each region and customer to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
