IHI awarded Contract for Steel Composite Modules Mock Up related to NuScale SMR Project in Romania

IHI was recently awarded a contract to fabricate a mock up of a steel composite modules for the reactor building side walls of NuScale Power Modules (NPM) Small Modular Reactor (Service) from Samsung C&T Corporation (Samsung C&T) as a part of Samsung C&T’s scope of work of FEED (*1) Phase 2 for the Romania SMR Project utilizing NuScale Power Corporation (NuScale) technology at a former coal fired power plant site in Doicesti, Romania (Project).

Samsung C&T, Fluor Corporation and Sargent & Lundy, along with NuScale, are currently taking part in the Project for RoPower (*2).

IHI has previously supplied steel composite modules for overseas Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) type nuclear power plants and during the Service is expected to verify and validate the manufacturing processes of the composite steel modules, ensuring minimal impact on the local construction schedule managed by Samsung C&T. The mock-fabrication will be conducted at IHI's Yokohama plant, with completion expected by April 2025.

IHI decided to invest in NuScale in 2021 and has since participated in the development of SMR technology. Leveraging its extensive manufacturing experience and technical expertise accumulated over the years, IHI aims to contribute to achieving a carbon-neutral society through nuclear power plant projects, including SMRs.

Beginning with this collaboration with Samsung C&T, IHI aims to continue contributing to the realization of a carbon-neutral society through its experience and technology in nuclear power plants, including SMR.

Notes
1. FEED (Front-end Engineering and Design) is the basic engineering work conducted after a feasibility study and is the precursor to EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction). It primarily involves accurate investment cost evaluation, the development of project execution plans, and preparations for selecting major suppliers. In this FEED Phase 2, costs examined in Phase 1 will be scrutinized, and evaluations of the construction schedule and investment security will be conducted through activities such as mock-up production.

2. RoPower is a project company established in 2022 by Nuclearelectrica (SNN) in a joint venture with Nova Power & Gas S.R.L to construct NuScale Power Modules (NPM) in Romania.
