IHI and Indonesian Partners Complete Southeast Asia’s First Green Ammonia Combustion Trial at Commercial Coal-Fired Power Plant
IHI Corporation (“IHI”) announced that, IHI, Indonesia’s state-owned power utility PT PLN Indonesia Power (“IP”) , and state-owned fertilizer company PT Pupuk Kujang (“Pupuk”) have made successful completion of Southeast Asia’s first pilot combustion trial using green ammonia at a commercial coal-fired power plant. The trial took place at the Labuan Power Plant, a PLN Group-owned thermal facility with a generating capacity of 300,000 kilowatts.

In the trial, IHI modified an existing boiler burner –originally manufactured by another company— to IHI-designed burner capable of ammonia combustion. A small percentage of green ammonia, produced by Pupuk, was used in the test. This marked IHI’s second successful ammonia combustion demonstration in Indonesia, following a similar trial at the Gresik Steam Power Plant in 2022.
On February 26, IHI, IP and Pupuk conducted a briefing for Indonesian and Japanese government officials and other guests. The session emphasized the importance of this initiative and helped deepen understanding of green ammonia as a viable clean energy solution. The demonstration also showcased the technology’s potential for broader application in countries seeking decarbonization solutions in the power sector.
IHI will continue to support sustainable energy transitions worldwide by supplying thermal power decarbonization technologies and promoting fuel ammonia utilization models that help shrink environmental footprints.
