IHI Infra-square Co., Ltd., a member of the IHI Group is pleased to announce that the Braila Bridge Project (Suspended Bridge over the Danube in Braila Area), in which IHI Infra-square Co., Ltd. and Webuild S.p.A., Italian construction company participated as a joint venture partner, has received the 9th JAPAN Construction International Award in the Overseas Construction and Development Project Category, presented by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT).

The JAPAN Construction International Award was established by MLIT in 2017 to recognize outstanding overseas construction and development projects that embody Japan’s commitment to providing high-quality infrastructure, while promoting the global activities of Japanese construction and real estate companies.
The Braila Bridge Project is a key component of a national road development program connecting the City of Braila and Tulcea County in eastern Romania. The project includes the design and construction of a suspension bridge crossing the Danube River with a total length of 1,974.3 meters and a main span of 1,120 meters, making it the longest bridge in Romania and the third longest suspension bridge in the European Union.

A joint venture comprising Webuild S.p.A. and IHI Infrastructure Systems Co., Ltd. (the company name was changed to IHI Infra-square Co., Ltd. effective April 1, 2026) has received the order of the project under a design-build contract. Through advanced bridge engineering technologies, rigorous quality control, and effective project management, the project was successfully completed as one of the largest infrastructure developments in the region.
A notable achievement of the project was the fabrication and erection of approximately 21,000 tons of steel stiffening girders, supported by Japanese engineers who provided technical expertise, quality assurance, and construction management throughout the project lifecycle.
Since its opening, the bridge has significantly improved regional connectivity, enhanced logistics efficiency, reduced travel times across the Danube River, and contributed to economic development and traffic safety in the surrounding areas. The project has also served as a symbol of international cooperation between Japan and Romania, including initiatives commemorating the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

IHI Infra-square will continue to leverage the experience and technical expertise gained through the Braila Bridge Project to contribute to infrastructure development and sustainable economic growth around the world.
