IHI Power Systems and IHI Corporation Commence Demonstration of Ammonia-Fueled Reciprocating Engine for Land-Based Power Generation
– Aiming to expand Power Generation Solutions that meet the low-carbon needs–

IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd. (IPS), a member of the IHI Group, and IHI Corporation are pleased to announce the commencement of demonstration operations of a land-based power generation plant powered by a 6,000 kW-class ammonia-fueled reciprocating engine (18V28ADF Engine) at its Ota Works in Gunma Prefecture, Japan.

Leveraging technologies developed through its pioneering work on ammonia-fueled marine engines, IPS is advancing the development of a land-based ammonia-fueled reciprocating engine capable of achieving an ammonia fuel ratio and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction rate of more than 90%. Through this demonstration program, IPS will verify the safety and operability of the complete power generation system, including auxiliary facilities. The demonstration testing is scheduled for completion during Japanese fiscal year 2026, with commercial sales planned to commence in Japanese fiscal year 2027.

The IHI Group is promoting the expansion of the ammonia value chain through both fuel ammonia supply & development and fuel utilization combustion technologies of ammonia. In addition to advancing ammonia conversion technologies for coal-fired boilers and developing 100% ammonia-fired gas turbines, the IHI Group is now extending ammonia-fueled reciprocating engine technology into the land-based power generation sector. Through these efforts, IHI Group aims to expand its portfolio of power generation solutions capable of meeting the needs of customers striving towards a low-carbon society in Japan and around the world.

The power generation system is intended for a broad range of applications, including industrial facilities, remote islands in Japan and overseas, data centers, mining operations, and industrial parks, where highly efficient low-carbon power sources are increasingly required. In particular, the system is expected to provide a practical pathway for the gradual low-carbon transition of existing diesel power generation facilities currently fueled by heavy fuel oil or diesel fuel, thereby supporting the demand creation for fuel ammonia.

The engine used in the demonstration testing is a 6,000kW-class ammonia/heavy fuel oil dual-fuel engine for land-based power generation. The engine is based on the 1,600kW-class 28ADF*(1) engine originally developed as a main propulsion engine for coastal vessels and has been enlarged to meet the requirements of larger power generation applications.
In addition to its enlarged V-type configuration, the engine incorporates advanced power generation control technologies derived from the development of the 25ADF ammonia-fueled auxiliary engine for oceangoing vessels. The engine is capable of operating in both ammonia-firing mode and conventional heavy fuel oil-fired mode and is expected to achieve an ammonia fuel ratio and GHG emissions reduction rate exceeding 90%.

The demonstration program will validate the performance of the ammonia-fueled engine itself and evaluate the safety and operability of the entire power generation system. This includes fuel supply facilities, exhaust gas after-treatment systems, and ammonia leak mitigation measures. With future commercial deployment in mind, the facility adopts a compact enclosure design that offers both installation flexibility and a reduced footprint. To ensure safe operation, the plant is equipped with systems capable of containing and neutralizing ammonia within the enclosure in the unlikely event of a leak, enabling customers to utilize the technology with confidence.

Looking ahead to broader adoption of ammonia-fueled engines for land-based applications, IPS is committed to advancing both ammonia utilization technologies and demand creation initiatives. Through these efforts, the company will contribute to the early expansion of the ammonia value chain as part of the IHI Group’s broader decarbonization strategy. Furthermore, IPS will continue to pursue the development of fully ammonia-fueled engines with the ultimate goal of achieving zero CO₂ emissions and contributing to the realization of a carbon-neutral society.

*(1) The 28ADF Engine is an ammonia dual fuel reciprocating engine installed as the main propulsion engine on “Sakigake”, the world’s first commercial-use ammonia-fueled tugboat, which entered service in August 2024.

During demonstration operations of the vessel, the engine achieved an ammonia co-firing ratio of more than 90% and a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction rate of more than 90%, reaching a maximum reduction of approximately 95%.
In addition, concentrations of unburned ammonia and nitrous oxide (N2O) contained in the exhaust gas were reduced to nearly zero after passing through the exhaust gas after-treatment system.
The research and development of the 28ADF and 25ADF engines were conducted as part of the “Green Innovation Fund Project” supported by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).
