Development of the 2 MW-Class Gas Turbine Cogeneration System Fueled Exclusively by Liquid Ammonia
Wins the Engineering Special Encouragement Award from the Engineering Advancement Association of Japan (ENAA)
IHI Corporation and IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd. received the Engineering Special Encouragement Award for the “2 MW-Class Gas Turbine Cogeneration System Fueled Exclusively by Liquid Ammonia Project” (hereafter “the Project”) at the 2026 Engineering Contribution Award Ceremony hosted by the ENAA. This award is presented to companies, individuals, or groups related to the engineering industry who have greatly contributed to industry development or are anticipated to do so.
This award recognizes the trailblazing technology development in the Project that is anticipated for commercial application, including the three achievements below. The Project was driven in collaboration with Tohoku University and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, under the Green Innovation Fund program of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).
- Succeeded in CO₂-free power generation with a gas turbine system fueled 100% by liquid ammonia in 2022(*1)
- Conducted long-term durability testing at IHI Aioi Works (Aioi City, Hyogo Prefecture) assuming social implementation(*2)
- Delivered decarbonization value gained by CO₂-free ammonia power generation to Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai(*3)
Building on the outcomes of this Project, IHI is working jointly with GE Vernova(GEV) to develop ammonia combustion system in large gas turbines, aiming for technology ready by 2030. IHI/GEV have already demonstrated 100% ammonia combustion successfully using a full-scale combustor under operating conditions equivalent to the full-load operation of GEV’s F-class gas turbine, such as pressure, temperature, and flow rate.
IHI will continue to work on building the fuel ammonia value chain in addition to development for social implementation of gas turbines fueled exclusively by ammonia, as an applied technology for ammonia.

CO₂-free power generation achieved with the world’s first gas turbine using 100% liquid ammonia
–Reduction of over 99% greenhouse gases during combustion–
(*2) Conducted long-term durability testing assuming social implementation at IHI Aioi Works (Aioi City, Hyogo Prefecture) from July 2024. The tests confirmed that the system achieved the planned power output while sufficiently suppressing emissions of nitrous oxide (N₂O) and nitrogen oxide (NOx), which are potent greenhouse gases, and that durability performance is comparable to that of conventional natural gas operation. The electricity and steam generated during these tests were used onsite at Aioi Works.
