IHI will join to a prime seminar at “SEA JAPAN 2026”, an international maritime exhibition held in Tokyo Big Sight(Koto, Tokyo) as a speaker.
"SEA JAPAN 2026" is an international maritime exhibition that has been held biennially for over 30 years since its first event in 1994. It serves as a platform for maritime industry professionals from not only Japan but also around the world to engage in business matching and information exchange. On April 22, IHI will give a presentation titled " First Step Toward Satellite VDES Implementation: Current Status and Future Prospects" at the session " It's Here - The State of Satellite VDES in the Real World"
IHI is promoting initiatives for the utilization of data from space, on land, and underwater. As part of these efforts, in order to enhance ship monitoring using satellites, since fiscal 2023 IHI has been conducting the "Development and Demonstration of Maritime Domain Awareness Technology Using Communication Satellite Constellations for Ships" under the Key and Advanced Technology R&D through Cross Community Collaboration Program*1. This involves the development of Satellite VDES*2, a next-generation maritime communication infrastructure that enables the capture of ship location information and mutual communication.
In addition, towards the social implementation of Satellite VDES, in 2022, we established the "Satellite VDES Consortium" in collaboration with MOL Techno-Trade, Ltd., FURUNO ELECTRIC Co., Ltd., ArkEdge Space Co., Ltd., TST Corporation, Japan Radio Co., Ltd., Mitsui & Co., Ltd., and the Ocean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, and as the representative , we are promoting the activities of the consortium.
At "SEA JAPAN 2026," where 600 companies from 33 countries are expected to exhibit and over 30,000 attendees are anticipated, we will introduce solutions utilizing satellite VDES. Through this, we aim to promote the implementation of Satellite VDES worldwide and advance the realization of a safer and more secure maritime environment.
◇Seminar Detail
Date of seminar : 2026/04/22 11:00~13:00
Name of seminar : SEA JAPAN 2026 Prime seminar
「It's Here - The State of Satellite VDES in the Real World」
Theme : 「First Step Toward Satellite VDES Implementation: Current Status and Future Prospects」
1 : A program led by the Cabinet Office and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to promote research and development of cutting-edge technologies that are important for economic security.
2 : Satellite VDES (VHF Data Exchange System) is an extended system of the AIS (Automatic Identification System), which is already widely used for ship operation and maritime traffic management as a device for reporting the position of one's own ship. By using satellites, it can transmit and receive on a global scale, and its mutual communication function enables coordination even on the high seas.
