IHI Participates in Ministry of the Environment’s National Decarbonization Initiative

IHI employees recently participated in One Team Challenge as part of the Ministry of the Environment’s National Movement for New and Prosperous Lifestyles toward Decarbonization (see note 1).

The sponsors of this initiative were NTT Communications Corporation and NTT Comware Corporation. It aims to accelerate the economy’s overall decarbonization by encouraging employees to own environmental issues through their own eco-actions (note 2), such as by minimizing deliveries to their homes or by rinsing their laundry just once during wash cycles. This endeavor was from July 25 through October 18, 2023, with 1,348 participants from 13 companies taking part, including from IHI.

Employees from participating companies accessed NTT Communications’ Green Program for Employee app (note 3) and registered their daily eco-actions. The app showed carbon dioxide emissions savings from their efforts, naturally enhancing their awareness of their contributions to the environment. After the initiative finished, NTT Comware tabulated and analyzed corporate carbon dioxide savings and shared the results with participants.

Participating from IHI headquarters were 14 volunteers. The analysis showed that many of IHI’s employees practice eco-actions every day. On a per-capita basis, they have lowered carbon dioxide emissions more and undertaken more eco-actions than workers at other companies. The IHI employees noted that they had learned to undertake more eco-actions in keeping with the purpose of this initiative.

IHI Group ESG Management represents a commitment to decarbonizing the entire value chain by fiscal 2050. An interim goal is to halve the Group’s Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions from fiscal 2019 levels by fiscal 2030.

For ESG management to progress, it is vital to heighten employees’ environmental awareness. IHI’s participation in this initiative paved the way for future efforts to elevate eco-consciousness.

The IHI Group will keep pursuing ESG management and help materialize a carbon-neutrality economy.

Notes

  • 2. Eco-actions help reduce carbon dioxide emissions. This initiative and the Green Program for Employee incorporate efforts that people can easily adopt into daily living, centering on the Zero Carbon Action 30 concept of the Ministry of the Environment, detailed in the following Japanese-only site.
