Human Rights/DE&I

Empowering Our Global Talent Pool

The IHI Group prioritizes diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) in keeping with its unwavering commitment to human rights. It accordingly fosters the success of its international employees in Japan and abroad.

Domestically, we provide annual Japanese language training for our international employees before they join IHI. We additionally maintain a consultation desk to help address issues specific to foreign employees.

On September 6, we conducted a workshop on Japanese business culture for foreign nationals who joined the company earlier this year. This session included lectures and group discussions to equip participants with the cross-cultural skills to collaborate effectively. A networking event with senior employees after this workshop enabled participants to build meaningful connections.

In July this year, the company set up a prayer room within the Toyosu IHI Building. Previously, meeting rooms were available for worship, but in response to requests from foreign employees and employees hosting international customers, the company created a dedicated space to allow people to practice their faiths. The interior reflected input from foreign employees, including a space for washing hands and feet. Management hopes that employees and clients from various religious and cultural backgrounds will benefit from this facility.

Overseas endeavors this year have included hosting the Regional HR Conference Meeting on June 13 at IHI ASIA PACIFIC PTE. LTD. in Singapore. Among the 25 participants were human resources representatives from headquarters in Japan and affiliates across the Asia-Pacific. This event aimed to build a global community by sharing knowledge and insights about managing and developing talent.

In the first half of this event, representatives from the HR department in Japan explained the intent behind the IHI Group’s efforts to foster an organizational culture that values DE&I, while also presenting the current state of Japanese society and IHI. In group discussions that followed, participants exchanged views and deepened their understanding of DE&I initiatives in Japan.

In the second half, an external instructor conducted a workshop on psychological safety. This session illustrated how embedding DE&I in workplaces and ensuring psychological safety can significantly improve workplace engagement.

This lecture proved to be an excellent opportunity for people to reflect on DE&I from their own perspectives. Feedback was very positive, as one participant expressed a desire to incorporate IHI’s domestic initiatives in their own company while another said they will look to prioritize psychological safety when interacting with colleagues.

The IHI Group will continue to create an environment that offers fair opportunities, being mindful of different personal backgrounds, living conditions, gender, nationality, and other factors while recognizing and leveraging individual strengths.
