Kid’s Summer Lab 2024 Held at Toyosu IHI Building

On August 21 and 22, IHI hosted “Kids Summer Lab 2024” for local elementary school students in the atrium on the first floor of the Toyosu IHI Building. Now in its fifth year, the event provides a range of fun activities to spark children’s interest in science and technology and strengthen community ties.

The first day focused on the theme of energy. The children explored ways to generate and convert energy through experiments and activities. They built their own solar-powered vehicles to understand how such energy systems work. The children were thrilled by the unexpected speed of their vehicles and enjoyed creatively modifying them to go even faster and navigate obstacles.

On the second day, the focus shifted to rockets, and the children immersed themselves in the marvels of space. They began by using a massive air cannon to understand the power of air. Following this, they experimented with a liquid nitrogen rocket to learn the basics of rocket science. Additionally, participants were given the opportunity to “touch a cloud” by creating artificial clouds using liquid nitrogen and hot water. They also built telescopes, inspired by those made by Galileo Galilei, the father of astronomy, to observe the moon.

Many positive comments were received from participating children and parents, such as, “I was able to experience the scientific wonders I see in comics,” “My child enjoyed it from start to finish,” and “We discovered so many new things!” Over the two days, 303 parents and children attended the event, filling the Toyosu IHI Building with lively family activities.

IHI will continue to support youth education through such activities while strengthening community ties and continuing corporate activities for local residents.
