IHI Participates in “Waterfront Big Experiment 2024” in Tokyo
On September 28, IHI took part in the “Waterfront Big Experiment 2024” along the Shiohama Canal in Toyo, Koto Ward, not far from the IHI Toyosu headquarters. This event has been held since 2020 by the Toyo-Shinsuna Canal Renaissance Council, which comprises neighborhood associations, companies, and other stakeholders and which IHI is a part of. The event focuses on environmental and disaster preparedness, harnessing the waterfront along the Shiohama Canal, to make the area vibrant and appealing. Currently working on a project to redevelop a former factory site in the Sunamachi district of Koto Ward, IHI played its part in revitalizing the waterfront and reinforcing local community ties through the event.
This year featured disaster preparedness rubber boat rides, fishing workshops, a community market, and corporate exhibitions. The Mayor of Koto Ward was a special guest at this lively event attracting around 400 local residents.

As a new initiative, IHI conducted several activities for residents to connect with their waterfront environment, learn more about environmental issues and think about disaster preparedness in their community. IHI held a hands-on session of card games sold as an educational disaster preparedness tool, rubber boat drills were conducted to simulate flood responses, and there was an exhibition of “Botanical Light,” which was developed by Green Display Co., Ltd. This plant-powered light generates power by harnessing electrons released from soil and water and requires no external power.
Participating employees shared comments such as “It was great to interact with the local children,” and “I was surprised by the high level of disaster preparedness among community members.” These experiences also improved IHI employees’ understanding of the local community.
IHI remains committed to upholding good relationships with communities in which it operates.
