IHI’s Akishima Office and Mizuho Works Provide Workplace Experiences for Local Junior High School Students

The IHI Akishima Office and Mizuho Works annually run a workplace experience program for local junior high school students. This year two students from Fussa Daisan Junior High School took part in this initiative, from September 25 through 27.

The first day started with an overview of IHI, including an explanation about the jet engine business and operations at the Akishima Office and Mizuho Works. The students then visited the exhibition area of the Akishima Office, learning more about IHI offerings such as jet engines and space development equipment and their underlying technologies.

The students toured the Mizuho Works in the morning of the second day. They learned about the mechanics of flight by observing training jet engines and going though inspection requirements for jet engine maintenance. They used rivets (see note below) to create their own keychains. They then toured the jet engine test area and saw parts repairs and inspections, deepening their understanding of the Mizuho Works’ operations. The visit also included a tour of the facility’s childcare center and an overview of IHI’s commitment to employee well-being.

In the afternoon, the students took part in a planning session at the Akishima Office, presenting their original products. Their creative proposals of handkerchiefs and calendars featuring the IHI logo and jet engine photos impressed the employees of the planning department.

Note: Riveting securely joins metal plates and other parts by inserting nail-like rivets through holes in materials and using a specialized tool to spread out and clinch the end by beating or pressing.

On the third day, the students acted as museum directors, building on their visits to the exhibition area on the first day. They explained IHI’s products and history to employees pretending to be visitors. Despite being required of considerable technical knowledge, the students were articulate, explaining clearly to the visitors.

Participating students walked away with a deep understanding of IHI’s commitment to quality products. “I was impressed with how the employees strive to create very safe products,” said one participant. “I learned about the tremendous commitment of so many employees to creating aero-engines that transport many people,” commented the other. This experience in a manufacturing environment deepened the students’ understanding about IHI’s products and enabled them to appreciate the company’s technological prowess and dedication to quality.

IHI Group will continue to collaborate with the educational efforts of schools through workplace experience and other programs and keep fostering tomorrow’s talent.

Note: Tours and workplace experience programs at IHI’s works and offices are mainly for local schools and not for the general public.
