IHI Holds Logistics-themed "A Peek behind the Scenes of Everyday Life" Workshop at IHI Yokohama Office
On December 6, 2024, at the IHI Group Yokohama Labs (experimentation and research facility), the Yokohama Office held a logistics-themed workshop for senior high school students and employees titled "A Peek behind the Scenes of Everyday Life."
At the workshop, participants thought about the management and strategies of a hypothetical transportation company. The workshop was designed to help participants discover issues in aspects of daily life that they'd taken for granted and develop their ability to come up with solutions. The event was attended by 15 students from the Tokyo Metropolitan High School of Science and Technology and five IHI employees.
In the workshop, participants broke up into groups of five—three high school student teams and one employee team. Each team was tasked with managing a hypothetical transportation company and was given the mission of transporting designated cargo to designated recipients within a designated amount of time. Their results were then evaluated along the three axes of (1) whether or not there was cargo damage or cargo issues, (2) how little CO2 they emitted, and (3) how well they kept down costs. No rankings were assigned.
Each team discussed which of the three perspectives to prioritize, decided on management strategies, and delivered the designated cargo within the allotted time to seven destinations within the IHI Group Yokohama Labs. They then reflected on their own mission performance and announced the insights they had gained and points they thought required improvement. The workshop was lively, with other teams asking many questions, and the event provided various learning opportunities for all involved.
Lastly, the workshop participants watched a demonstration of the Skypod, a high-speed 3D picking system developed by IHI Group company IHI Logistics & Machinery Corporation. This introduction to the latest technologies being used in logistics warehouses gave participants a better feeling of what logistics, the workshop's theme, are like at the ground level.
Feedback from participants included comments like "I got a deeper understanding of what happens during the delivery process," "I realized the importance of using a multifaceted mental approach when formulating and implementing strategies aligned with management decision-making frameworks," and "I liked being able to see the latest logistics technologies."
Through the workshop, the participants got to experience the struggles and ingenuity of the many people working behind the scenes of things they took for granted in their everyday lives.
IHI plans to continue improving its "A Peek behind the Scenes of Everyday Life" workshop. By nurturing peoples' insights into everyday problems and their abilities to solve these problems, we're helping raise a new generation of human resources that can thrive in a wide range of fields.
