IHI Employees Enthrall Students at Koto Ward’s Toyosu Kita Elementary School with Class about their Neighborhood
On June 25, IHI employees conducted a class about the Toyosu district for five classrooms of third-year students (150 students) at Toyosu Kita Elementary School in Koto Ward, Tokyo, near the company’s Head Office. They taught the students about the past and future of the area and about local urban development initiatives.
Every year, the school invites IHI representatives involved in Toyosu’s development to help students become experts about their neighborhood through this class. The employees outlined Toyosu’s origins, the company’s shipbuilding operations there, and how IHI helped transform the area into a vibrant urban district after ending six decades of shipbuilding there in 2002.
The children were fascinated by what Toyosu was like in its shipyard days, which was dramatically different from the area today, and they exclaimed in surprise upon seeing the historical photos and materials presented in the class.
As with last year, the class also looked at the future of Toyosu. The gathering was an excellent opportunity for the local children to contemplate what kind of future they wanted for Toyosu, which has transitioned from shipbuilding into a working, residential, educational, and recreational urban space and which will be the future site of Toyosu Sail Park*, a subway extension, and an area that leverages the latest technologies.
During the Q&A portion of the class, students who had studied Toyosu in preparation for the class asked questions about Toyosu' industrial heritage, the Toyosu Sail Park facility scheduled to open in July, and transportation, including smart mobility and the new subway line.
IHI will continue to treasure its ties to the communities in which it operates and remain a good corporate citizen.

- IHI and Mitsubishi Estate Co., Ltd. have decided on “Toyosu Sail Park” as the name of the area they are developing through the Toyosu 4-2 area development project, the last large re-development project being conducted in the Toyosu 2- and 3-chome areas. Toyosu Sail Park is scheduled to open in July 2025.
