IHI recently co-hosted the 4th “LGBTQ+ Ally Conference” for the first time with Toshiba Corporation (hereinafter, “Toshiba”). Approximately 400 employees from both companies participated, aiming to share the initiatives each company has developed internally and deepen mutual understanding.
The “LGBTQ+ Ally Conference” is an event IHI has held three times since fiscal 2022. It brings together LGBTQ+ individuals, allies*1, and interested employees to create a workplace where every employee can be themselves. By sharing personal experiences, the conference encourages allies to consider how they should act. This conference marked the first time it was co-hosted with another company. It reaffirmed fundamental concepts such as “SOGI”*2 and “outing”*3, and introduced specific support activities from both companies. During the panel discussion, one LGBTQ+ employee from Toshiba and one IHI employee representing allies took the stage, exchanging views with support representatives from both companies.

Through this conference, we were able to share diversity-related challenges as a societal theme with other companies and foster a shared awareness of addressing them together. Participants shared feedback such as: “Hearing that ‘subtle ally visibility’—showing support through stickers or cards—helps individuals, I want to continue doing this,” and “Collaborating with other companies broadened my perspective and led to new discoveries.” This reaffirmed the difficulty and importance of imagining diverse perspectives, providing an opportunity to take these issues personally.
IHI will continue creating collaborative learning opportunities with external partners to further advance Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I). We will also leverage the insights gained through education and information sharing to continuously foster an organizational culture where diverse employees can work with peace of mind.
- *1 Ally: A person who understands and supports LGBTQ+ individuals. Anyone can be an ally, regardless of whether they are LGBTQ+ themselves.
- *2 SOGI: Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity
- *3 Outing: Revealing a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity to a third party without their consent.
