IHI Holds the IHI Monozukuri Class as Part of the Toyosu Mirai Project 2026
On March 1, 2026, IHI, together with the Shibaura Institute of Technology and SCSK Corporation, jointly hosted the “Toyosu Mirai Project,” an educational program aimed at nurturing young people who will lead future science and technology. The program was held in the Toyosu area of Koto-ku, Tokyo.
This initiative is designed to foster children’s curiosity and learning through hands-on experiences with science, technology, and manufacturing. The venue, “TOYONOMA,” is an incubation facility located within Toyosu Sail Park, which opened in 2025.
As part of the program, IHI organized a bridge-building workshop using pasta and clay under the title “IHI Monozukuri Class.” A total of 22 families (50 participants) attended, gaining a deeper understanding of how combinations of materials and structural design affect overall strength through both lectures and hands-on activities.
The workshop combined a lecture on structural fundamentals, experiments to deepen understanding, and a hands-on activity in which participants built bridges using pasta and clay. Through this experience, children learned intuitively how bridges support weight. While constructing their bridges, many participants were seen carefully handling the pasta to avoid breaking it and experimenting with different connection methods and shapes using clay to create stronger structures.
In addition, the “Da Vinci Bridge,” a structure that can stand without nails or adhesives, was introduced. By assembling this structure, participants were able to gain a hands-on understanding of the importance of shape and assembly methods in structural design.
IHI plans to continue offering the “IHI Monozukuri Class” as part of the Toyosu Mirai Project in collaboration with local companies and universities. Through STEAM education, IHI remains committed to providing opportunities for children to engage with science, technology, and manufacturing, and to develop the skills needed to shape the future.
