The IHI Group Is Working to Reduce GHG Emissions Generated by Its Business Activities
As part of its efforts to address climate change, the IHI Group aims to achieve carbon neutrality across its entire value chain by 2050. Regarding GHG emissions (Scopes 1 and 2) emitted directly and indirectly from its facilities and offices as a result of its business activities, the Group aims to reduce these emissions to half of the 2019 levels by fiscal 2030.
As part of our efforts to achieve this fiscal 2030 target, we would like to introduce activities at the Yokohama Works, the Toyosu IHI Building, and the IHI Group Human Resources Development and Exchange Center (I-STEP Shonan).
The Yokohama Works house the headquarters for technology development as well as production facilities for nuclear power equipment and industrial machinery, making it a site with high GHG emissions. To date, we have implemented various initiatives to reduce GHG emissions, such as installing solar panels and conducting employee training through energy-saving workshops. Starting in October 2024, with the aim of reducing GHG emissions generated during product manufacturing, we began sourcing a portion of our purchased electricity from net-zero renewable energy sources (hereinafter referred to as “net-zero renewable energy”). Since April 2025, nearly all of the electricity purchased by the IHI Group for the Yokohama Works has been sourced from net-zero renewable energy. This marks the first such initiative among IHI’s production sites.
Since its completion in 2006, the Toyosu IHI Building has implemented continuous energy-saving measures and switched to LED lighting, achieving a reduction in GHG emissions of approximately 30% in fiscal 2024 compared to fiscal 2019. Furthermore, starting in October 2025, all purchased electricity has been sourced from net-zero renewable energy. This will result in an annual reduction of approximately 4,000 tons of GHG emissions. Approximately 4,000 IHI Group employees work at the Toyosu IHI Building, and these environmental impact reduction efforts also serve to raise environmental awareness among employees.
I-STEP Shonan was completed in 2015 as an IHI Group training facility. The installation of solar panels has been underway since its completion, and by fiscal 2024, installation was completed in all areas where it was possible. As a result, solar panels now cover approximately 30% of I-STEP Shonan’s electricity consumption. Furthermore, starting in August 2025, by sourcing 100% of purchased electricity from net-zero renewable energy, the facility has achieved net-zero Scope 2 emissions.
The IHI Group will continue to promote the use of renewable energy alongside ongoing energy-saving initiatives, aiming to halve GHG emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by fiscal 2030.
