IHI Holds Outreach Class on Rockets at Masugata Junior High School in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture
On November 14, IHI held an outreach class at Masugata Junior High School in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, for approximately 30 volunteer students from grades 7 through 9 on the theme of “how rockets work.” This initiative was organized at the school’s request as an opportunity to supplement science classroom learning. On this occasion, Professor Yoshimura, Specially Appointed Associate Professor at the Ochanomizu University Institute for Science & Education, also participated in the program, enabling the class to incorporate expert knowledge related to education and experiments.
On the day of the event, IHI employees served as instructors and explained the structure of rockets and the mechanisms behind rocket launches. They also introduced how the science used in rockets and rocket launches contributes to everyday life and society. Using specific examples, the class showed how basic principles learned in science classes, such as changes in the state of matter and the law of action and reaction, are applied in rocket technology, helping students experience the connection between science and society.
During the class, students took part in making model rockets using plastic bottles and aluminum cans and conducted launch experiments so that they could actively experience scientific principles for themselves. It was particularly impressive to see the students enthusiastically engage in the experiments while discussing how they could make the model rockets fly with greater force, demonstrating strong interest in how rockets fly and in the vastness of space. This outreach class provided a valuable opportunity to foster the students’ interest in science and creativity.
IHI will continue to actively support learning opportunities for children who will lead the next generation, including through outreach classes. Guided by its management philosophy of contributing to the development of society through technology, IHI will also continue its efforts to support the growth of the people who will shape the future.
