Discovering Careers in Science and Engineering through Bridge Engineering IHI Infra-square Offers a Special Program for High School Students

On July 23 and September 15, 2026, IHI Infra-square (IIS) held special classes for first-year students from Risho Gakuen Osaka Ritsumeikan High School in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture. A total of 228 students participated in the July session and 489 students in the September session. Now in its third year, the program aims to spark students’ interest in science and engineering and help them explore future study and career options.

The July program featured a lecture on the role of bridges and bridge construction technologies, a hands-on bridge model activity, an introduction to engineering careers, and a collaborative workshop with employees from diverse national backgrounds. 26 IIS employees participated in the program. One student commented, “The program gave me a valuable opportunity to think about my future career and job choices.”

In September, university staff members, corporate engineers, and high school students took part in a dialogue session. 7 employees from IHI, IHI AEROSPACE, and IIS participated, sharing their work responsibilities, career paths, and workplace experiences, including those involving gender bias. According to a post-program survey, approximately 90% of students said the session had increased their interest in science and engineering, including bridge engineering.

Helping students understand how technology connects with people and society is essential to nurturing the technical talent of the future. By bringing the technologies and expertise developed through its businesses into educational settings, the IHI Group supports the development of future generations in local communities and strengthens the foundations of its future business.
