IHI Launching Methanation Business Feasibility Study in Indonesia in Drive to Make Existing LNG Supply Chain Carbon Neutral

IHI Corporation announced today that it concluded a memorandum of understanding with PT Pertamina (Persero), Indonesia’s national energy company, based on which the two entities recently embarked on a feasibility study in that country. They will explore the creation of a production through usage value chain for e-methane, so-called because of its manufacture using electricity. The goal here is to make e-methane near an existing liquefied natural gas plant in Indonesia for the domestic or export markets.

IHI will mainly handle the technical and feasibility studies, with Pertamina choosing prospective study sites. Pertamina and IHI look to start commercial e-methane operations in 2030.

The Indonesian government and Pertamina seek to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030, making the country carbon neutral by 2060. Suppressing carbon dioxide emissions and carbon capture and utilization should help reach those goals. This feasibility study move resulted after IHI’s methanation technologies came to Pertamina’s attention while collaborating with several companies in decarbonization efforts. At the Business 20 Summit in Bali earlier in November 2022, Pertamina presented this feasibility study to the Task Force Energy, Sustainability, and Climate (TF ESC) as part of its decarbonization drive.

October 2022 saw IHI initiate Southeast Asia’s first ammonia co-firing pilot facility, in Indonesia. In pushing forward with that operation and the feasibility study, the company hopes to help the nation decarbonize by supplying ammonia, e-methane, and other carbon solutions technologies.
